We want to buy a motor boat in the South of France its 16.5m loa, 4.75m beam, about 7m high and weighs 40 tonnes. Whats the best and most economic way to get it back either to England or Northern France? If anyone has any ideas or experience of this I would love to hear from you roger@rogerfox.com /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The canal limits are 38.5 m OAL, 5m beam, 1.8m draught and (here is your main problem) 3.5m air draught. Unless to can cut the top off you go around by sea.
I think your limit for economic road transport is 40ft OAL but check.
Sounds like you will be burning a lot of diesel going the long way round, but if you can't afford it you should have a smaller boat! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like a delivery skipper by sea is the only option (ie out of the med around spain and across biscay). At 40 tons she must be steel and 7m air draft is very high for a 15m boat. She won't get under many river/estuary bridges if that's relevant and rules out the french canals.

Thanks for that, 7m is at the moment an estimate and is overall height, draft being 2m. Have asked the broker for exact height. would be good to email or talk to you if possible

Is that 7m from the keel to the top of the boat, or waterline to the top of the boat?

If 7m from the keel then she may fit on the French canals as presumabley the airdraft would be somewhere between 4 and 4.5m

I had a quote last December from www.petersandmay.com for a 45 foot sailing boat to be transported by ship from the South of France to Southampton. The mast is kept up because height is not an issue on the ship
Length 14.53m
Beam 4.4m
Height Upright mast
Weight 15,330 kgs

GBP 9560

They would have lifted from the water in Toulon or Genoa and put back in the water in Southampton. The ship runs approx. once a month and you just motor up to the side of the ship.

Quote then obtained for same trip for 38 foot sailing boat - GBP 6200.

I'm still looking for the next boat... Not involved with the company but they did respond quickly to my quotation request on the web.
