Froggie's cruise underway

Thanks for the update Noel, great pics btw. Are you continuing around to Cork, it looks as though you are pretty much on the extreme SW corner at Baltimore.
Hi Andie. Kinsale is the primary destination where we plan to be based for the next month, but visits to Cork City, Cobh, Drakes Pool, Castletownsend, Glandore and Courtmacsherry are all on the cards if the weather is suitable.

Here in Kenmare where I live there is an annual event that includes a run out to the Bull rock. Through the hole that previous mariners believed was a portal to another world. Some footage of this event is available on YouTube. Search Kenmare bull run and it should come up after a million videos of idiots being gored in Pamplona!

Thanks really enjoyed looking at those videos. I often wondered if the cruiser would fit under at suitable tide.

Fab pictures, specially those moon pics are amazing! What lens/focal length did you use? I tried shooting the full moon but failed miserably.

Thanks for the update!
Compliments from the marine photo maestro are too kind. I got lucky with some of the pics, the one with the RNLI lifeboat and moon was f5.6, speed 1/200, focal length 150mm on a rather inexpensive Nikon 18-200 lens. I was rather busy weight anchor and just grabbed the camera when I saw the scene.

Fantastic pics Noel, Please don't stop posting a log of your trip.:encouragement:

Thanks MrB. Will do. Taking a few days break and then back.

You should check out Barlogue if you're going as far as Castletownsend

(just realised they have a nice picture with my boat dead center)

a lovely spot to spend the night and take the dinghy up into Lough Hyne just before high tide, you should be able to return about an hour after high tide, or wait a while longer and get a real rollercoaster ride down the rapids. A lot of the kids throw themselves in there when the water is flying.

Thanks for that info.

A few more pics

The crew of this beautiful French classic yacht 'Morgengry' were moored beside me in Kinsale for a few days. I got a tour of the vessel and it was stunning. Equipped and designed for long distance cruising anywhere in the world. The onboard work shop was impressive, but the classic timber decor and utilisation of space was impressive.

Gentlemen, Pierre and Francois approaching four score years in the next few years have sailed the world in Pierre's beautiful classic yacht 'Morgengry'. She's even been around Cape Horn, but both their wives stay at home for some of the longer passages. They were most helpful to me when I arrived single handed.

Kinsale's Castlepark Marina manager Stephen is also a gourmet chef and this floating caribbean style restaurant on the marina pontoons opens at weekends.

I can't get used to the afternoon sea breeze we've been getting.
I always thought that was a made up thing when they taught it in school :-)

Yes indeed last week on the Wednesday the sea area forecast was 2-4 but with the sea breeze it became a more challenging 5 occasionally 6 mid afternoon.

Hey Kwacka, UK (area) cruising at its best ;)

Andie Mate, if the weather was like this here all the Time, Wow!!!!
But, then again we might be infested with Crocs in the Shannon and Sharks in the Menai Strait
Then again I think there maybe a Shark in The Strait anyway
Before anyone says so!!
;)

The biggest problem would be mutated midges from Scotland, big as sparrows! Far better off leaving tropical issues to the colonials....;)

Hope you are well old mate, all the best for the season, cheers.

Actually the town seems to almost have more French tourists than natives :) Certainly a lot of French flagged yachts in town. But ze Euro Mark is akepted in al ze besser resturants und cafes. :) :)

But not the poor old Pound eh?;)

What an interesting town Noel, I'm liking the pics of the village shops etc. Scubaman also includes images of the towns, houses and of course anything that he can make look interesting, for a great result.

Cheers Andie. Yes historic Kinsale is a rather cute and a very interesting spot. It is a former garrison town and the architecture is distinctly English in nature. It had great strategic military importance especially during the Napoleaon wars. The entrance to the harbour is guarded by two substantial military installations, Charles Fort and James fort. No French man-o-war could possibly get past the gun emplacements. :)

There is a small sandy beech 100m from the marina. Ideal for a morning swim.
