French translation please?

Can anyone tell me what the correct translation for 'Rudder Stock" is into French? I have left my yachtsman's dictionary on board and am in correspondence with a friend in France over his new instruments and auto-pilot and he refers to "axe", but I am not sure if that is a French word or his bad translation into what he thinks is an English word!

French English on line dictionary had no trouble with rudder but could not identify 'stock' in a marine context, so I tried 'shaft' lots of interesting suggestions there, mainly verbs, but none related to rudders!

The French word "axe" is, I think, the equivalent of the English word "axis", and can mean the stock of a rudder, as that is the axis upon which the rudder turns.

It is true that all the translations are not always simple : for example, you speak of "trim tab" for some models of self_steering wind-vane, but we said "flettner" (the name of the inventor).
