Average make life expectancy France: 82 years; U.K. is 81 years. As I said, lots of running up the ladder of assumptions and totally out of date.

If I may add a little more meaning to that, Philip, the life expectancy of a 50 year old UK male (which, at a totally wild guess, may be the mean of people on this forum) is 91. (That's according to Aviva's calculator, and they ought to know: https://www.direct.aviva.co.uk/myfuture/LifeExpectancy/AboutYou

Evidence has already been presented that some UK males much younger than that have lost many of their faculties.

P.S. Having messed around on a few other sites, I suspect 91 is a bit generous. It maybe reflects probabilities in the healthier parts of the UK for people with fewer negative lifestyle factors. Aviva's annuities obviously appear more generous if the average retirement period is longer.

This is getting rather far from the poor soul who came to grief. I hope he's remembered in softer ways by those who knew him.

Using their calculator, 91 seems to be the only answer.

I still have some of my faculties, in spite of forumite thoughts to the contrary.
