I'm going accross shrtly and my Life-raft service is out of date. Ludicrous as it sounds, should I take it off the boat or risk a fine?

As I understand it, the fine is only applicable to French registered yachts particularly charter yachts.
If you satisfy UK regulations in a UK registered yacht you should be ok.
I await the torrent of disagreement!!!!!!

are you confident it is still ok, if so ,keep it handy for the crossing, and then when near the french coast hide it in a locker?. out of sight ,out of mind.good luck

Nope, you'll be fine. If it's out of date it'll be as if you didn't have one, which is fine unless you're a coded charter yacht.
