French canal\'s

Thanks for advice on my last thread NigeB bsims Col, still stuck on finding a firm that will quote to overland the Sadler 32.

The more I read about, up the Rhone, even in August, the more 'iffy' it appears to be or perhaps most writers are on the over cautious side.

Many seem to go down, perhaps they never come back, I may need to change plan. The Med is full - well the marinas are especially Spain. Anyone know the situation East around Greece, Turkey.

Re: French canal\'s

I've been up the rhone in aug-sept, the flow is pretty strong, if you cant mange at least six knots in flat water, then dont do it, it will take you for ever. It is a wonderful trip! Especially the wine caves. The portugese marinas are not full and fairly cheap any of the marinas west of gib are not full, the weather is also kind and the shopping is cheaper! If thats any good for you, good sailing in portugal aswell most of the year. Good luck and fair winds!

Re: French canal\'s

Why not enjoy the French west coast down to Royan and then through the Midi canal. Take you at least year if not two to get as far Royan if you wanted to visit very good port going the coast. I can think of far worse places to be waiting for weather windows than the Biscay coast-can't wait for retirement.

Full marinas

The majority of Mediterranean marinas appear full or, more properly, they organise their bookings and waiting lists in such an incompetent manner as to be unable to guarantee anything.

If you turn up and there's room all well and good, you'll get in - albeit you'll keep out someone who may have "booked", (in actual fact put their name down on a waiting list).
Just through the Straits there's plenty of room.
Of the Junta de Andalucia marinas - there is plenty of room in Mazagon, Chipiona and Cadiz, both in the water and on the hard. Gelves is full, but has room ashore. Sancta Petri and Isla Christina have room for smaller boats and there's bags of room in Ayamonte and Puerto Sherry.
I speak with confidence having been to all of them in the last 5 weeks.
