Yesterday, I visited my favourite gelateria in Otranto (the one at the end of the parade just South of the stream). It was my favourite because, for the identical product, it was cheaper than the others. Upon my enquiry, the proprietor (a pleasant German lady) told me that a single scoop was now €2. I expressed surprise as when I was last there, 4 months ago, it was just €1.50. She acknowledged this and said that she had received a letter from the other gelateria in town telling her to increase her prices to match theirs. She felt she had no option but to comply. She went on to say that I could have a gelato for €1.50 any time I liked – and then sold me a generous portion at that price.
