Do you think this is going to work? My Cobb Oven will roast a chicken to perfection, but will it do proper sailors food? What do you reckon Dylan? Should I take the lid off first?

definately take the lid off

in an oven it can get above 100c

- unless you want to fill the cob with water and then attempt to boil a pie - that would be safe..... but stupid

No - but please stand well back and dont forget the video cam. :D:D

P.S. How can you eat those things. Ever looked at the contents list?

I'm not sure what "(Mono-and Di-Glycerides of Fatty Acids))" are but I have seen contents lists that have much more complicated ingredients. It would seem that they don't even contain the incredible lists of preservatives & unnatural colouring compounds that many products contain & don't forget that these wonderful pies now come in several different varieties.....some even represent balanced meals because they contain vegetables....yumy yumy :D

They don't usually contain much meat though. One big bit and two little ones seems to be about the norm, swimming in a lot of gravy.

look at the meat content - the last one I saw was 16% meat and no doubt even that would include things like eyeballs etc that are classed as meat but you wouldnt eat if you knew they were there. Makes MacDonalds look like quality!

Ingredients: Fray Bentos Just Steak Pie (475g)

Water, Beef (28%), Puff Pastry (24%) (Wheat Flour, Margarine (Vegetabhle Oil, Water, Salt, Emulsifier (Mono- and Di-glycerides of Fatty Acids), Water, Salt), Wheat Flour, Modified Maize Starch, Tomato Puree, Salt, Onion Powder, Barley Malt Extract, Natural Flavourings (Celery, Wheat), Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Ground White Pepper.

all of that and nearly 5% saturated fat as well.

Surely no-one actually eats s**t like this any more?

far be it from me to come over all health and safety

you are going to take the top off the tin aren't you?

Dylan

I found on t'web that it's best to remove totally from the tin, and rotate half way through oven time. This gets rid of the soggy pastry.

I guess this depends on how soggy the whole thing is before cooking.

Why not? Sometimes it's easier to just eat something for fuel, it doesn't need to be gourmet quisine when you are tired, cold, wet and hungry after a hard sail. If you have had a cold, wet sail you need some carbs and fat to burn, the problem with with carbs and fat comes when you are sat at a desk pushing a pen and not burning callories.

It is nice to eat good stuff though when you can.

OK sorry I want to take that back before it gets into a discussion, that was a joke. Before assuming something is bad give it a quick google first and you may be surprised to find not everything that sounds scientific is bad for you.

Nah.. soggy on the bottom and crispy on top. Yum.
