Just to put out a bit of loving for a change.

Jim came and 'helped' us instal our electronics at the weekend - love and respect for Jim taken as read - but this post is about something consqeuential to that...

We thought we had all the bits but found to be missing two t-pieces for the NMEA backbone. Off we trot to the shop to buy a couple. No can do. Not in stock. So what happened? Well, fortunately Jim was certain he had two spare at home, so Henry in the electronics department disconnected some of his display and gave us those two for free on on the promise that we would replace them asap.

What lovely service! It certainly made the difference to us.

As luck would have it, while we were tidying up at the end of the project, we found the errant two so were able to replace them pdq.

Have to say that although the prices may be on the high side, we have always found service and advice to be very good at the chandlery at Fox's.

Always check-out Seamark Nunn website before hand, Fox`s will price match ;)

As the 'Jim' in question, I have to say that Henry did his level best to help us out - even though the T Piece NMEA connectors were not in the Simrad/B&G price list.

As luck would have it, I worked out how the backbone installtion could be better routed, so the T pieces weren't required, and I returned them intact.

But full marks to Fox's chandlery.

Fox's Chandlery is very good - great range, very helpful staff. I'm in two minds about the price match routine though; if you don't go through the rigmarole of price matching you could feel as if you've been overcharged (which you probably have), although someone has to pay for the overhead of such large stocks.

yep, and I don't mind paying a bit extra for the convenience of the shop being on your doorstep and stocking the things you need at the last minute that you hadn't thought you might need. Or have lost or dropped in the drink. I don't begrudge anyone making a living and the quality staff do make a difference. Compare Fox's to Pirates Cave at at Gillingham!! Awful!

and, damn, I actually meant to post this in the East Coast section.

Seamark Nunn give the same service & even more personal as Andrew Nunn serves as well as good prices that often beet Fox`s.
I bought an item recently, i spent £200 & saved £100

Yes i done the price check & walked into Fox`s & Adie knocked the £100 off. I got a deal & Fox`s got the sale

My problem with that is that I can't help thinking they should have been charging £200 in the first place, not trying to rip people off by overcharging by 50% and then knocking the markup back down if somebody has the wit and wisdom to catch them at it

OK, I know, caveat emptor! Never the less, I'm likely to browse in Fox's and buy down the road at Seamark's!

Agreed but i compare the price on line,as its a 16 mile round trip

Depends a bit on what deal one chandler gets with a supplier that the other does not get! Often there is a minimum order with a supplier. Someone has a special order which the chandler does not want to lose so he/she makes up the minimum order but then needs to shift that stock quickly to avoid interest charges etc. so prices them down. The other chandler may have them in the normal course of business at a more "normal" price and is then forced to discount. Purple Marine, Speed Sails are amongst those chandlers that have "gone to the wall" in a fiercely competitive market. More businesses go broke, I am told, by charging too little than too much.

It is great to have facility like Fox's on your doorstep. T'internet does not make up for having a good look at stuff and not having to pay or wait for delivery. Its one of the few things I miss after moving her North from Ipswich

I really object in principle to the price matchers, its IMHO the retailer wanting his cake and also eat it. I'd rather give my business to the retailer with the gumption to put his price up front ...

Had a similar situation whilst installing autopilot, plotter and loads of other kit in Ipswich due to a duff Tee out of the box, Henry split a Garmin backbone starter kit for me and gave unsolicited discount as well, mind you I am trade. So we bought a Zodiac from them, what goes around comes around.:D

Precisely.

Haggling must plumb the depths when it comes to replacement windows. A neighbour resisted and was finally offered a price that was half the initial quote. She turned it down on the grounds that they must be a dodgy company.
