Looking through Solent Clowns bits and pieces I found our first ever journal
So hopefully this should be entertaining.
17th August
We recently purchased our Torch dinghy. Today was our first time on the water (without sail)!
We departed Cross house road slip way at 8:10 with much trepidation. Launch was a success, and after discovering our oars were good only for paddled we were on our way. Deep enough to fire our seagull...
A few days earlier it was a neglected piece of scrap...
(Big smile here as this is so Mark)
On second pull the old thing fired up. And we were on our way, learning back to front steering as we went. Looking over the sides revealed a grey and foreboding body of water seemingly waiting to take us in its deadly embrace.

(more smiles, so funny to think we were once terrified of the River Itchen)

But regardless of mild terror, we ploughed on.the mighty seagull

(Seagull mighty? Really Mark you are making me laugh too much!)

Did it's sterling best, and at times we probably exceeded walking speed...

And now over to Karen...
I am already laughing as my entry is all about being envious of Mark's footwear!
I begin...
I was terrified, but Mark being Mark made me feel safe - I think he was probably lying!
At one point we abruptly changed direction, heading for land: why are we going that way? I asked.
'Im testing the engine and steering, he replied, following it with 'I know what I am doing!'
I believed him (I am here aren't I writing in this journal!)
Through my very little time on the water I was in utter amazement about how different the world around me was. I was seeing my city in a different light, it was beautiful, a hidden view of Southampton only for the few- I was glad to become one of those select few.
I'm looking forward to new adventures even if they only last for an hour or two. I'm sure one day all the mini adventures will prepare us for a big one.

Thanks to my darling Mark
(Sorry bit tearful writing this) for starting us on a new amazing journey together. I love you XXX

Over to Mark:

We reached NorthamvBridg in and returned without incident. Our first test we passed!
Duration 1 hour 10 minutes.

What a beautiful find. I will post day two tomorrow.

A few years from me but what lovely memories.

Funny how I was scared and made me laugh how the seagull engine was a neglected piece of scrap. So Mark!
Hope you didn't mind me posting this.

If you kept a journal of all your outings, there will be many happy memories stored there for you. My logs are bit more spartan.

Mrs SC, if at this dark time you can find moments of sunshine in the blogs you and Mark created, then I have nothing but the greatest admiration for your strength. Those stories are very much part of his legacy, and underline the three dimensional styIe of the man himself.

Keep posting whenever you want to. We are your virtual family.

Read a few out to the family over dinner so funny. Will certainly share more. Many thanks I am aware there have been private message s once I have my laptop I will reply.

Nicely put Tim :encouragement:

Mrs SC, thank you for posting these memories. I hope you can find a few more that you are prepared to share?

Well said!

I was up in Southampton today. Over the last year Solent Clown and I have PMed each other saying we must meet up. Alas it will never happen.

Having the logbook will bring back memories over the years. Keep it and cherish it.

I look back at the first crossing of "La Manche" where I put an entry in at 0400 on the trip back from Sark, All it said was 0400 Bloody Cold. In a different hand (Bob who was with me added) So Bloody Cold I've lost all feeling from the neck down.

Fabulous!

Even though right now must be a very dark time for you, take comfort in the fact that you two had sailing adventures and fun together that many people on this forum could only dream of.

Lovely stuff, keep it coming.
