I have an old Gill coastal suit (not dry suit) and am wishing to upgrade it. I also have a musto hpx drysuit (awesome) but i'm not sure whether to buy more musto hpx gear ie jacket and salopettes or look at another make eg gill etc. budget is relatively flexible. the key point is that I want to get top end gear, ocean not coastal standard suits etc. Should i consider the XM ocean suit???

do any of you guys/girls have any ideas and or experience with various makes.

regards richard

We have XM Offshore kit & very pleased with the performance in ordinary Solent sailing. I would expect XM Ocean to be pretty good functionally, particularly in relation to overall cost. You would probably get more from Mustos, but at a far higher cost and not sure needed unless extreme sailing.

Try Decathlon for their French gear. Believe there is now a branch in London, also have a website. Literally just had a friend on the phone getting some gear for us in a Spanish outlet. Jacket 24.9 euros, saloppetes 30 euros. Perfectly good for coastal use. You can get good offshore stuff at less than double that. Remarkable value.

I had Musto ocean for 15 years and when it came time to change I bought the Gill offshore but after 3 years it was falling apart and leaking badly, now got Musto MPX and after 2 hard seasons including racing offshore I am glad I paid the extra.

Surprise surprise the 'Aldi all weather gear' recently sold was not made in China!, but UK.
At Aldi prices you can change completly every year, but looking at the quality my guess is you will be still wearing it in 5 years time!
Just because it has a fancy name tag does not always gaurantee quality and boy do you pay for the name tag!.
Why not try a boat jumble and get the best of both worlds a good set of gear at a resonable price! but know what your looking at!!!

We went Musto - like most things you get what you pay for!

I suppose it depends on the type of sailing you intend to do - we thought to ourselves "if we're mid pacific 2 weeks sail from land and the weather is rotten, would we rather have £300 extra in the bank or be warmer and dryer?"

We crossed the Channel last Sunday and it was pretty awful - heavy rain, F7 at times and mist; even a racing pigeon decided it was easier to travel with us. Our Musto HPX suits performed brilliantly, totally waterproof and we were very glad of them.
