I've moved from Cardiff to Whitehaven, but there doesn't seem to be a forum for 'NW England' in the same way that there was for the Bristol Channel - as a relative newbie, that was great for getting a second opinion on plans, ideas and all the rest. I'd be interested to know why the NW isn't similarly covered, and also (more) interested to know if there are other forums that deal with the area.

I've always thought the same! We're Liverpool-based. This will also be the first time we've sailed in these waters (owned boat for 2.5 years of lockdown-delayed refit, only splashed in January, previously lived in South East - for my sins - and sailed Solent-based! ?)

Perhaps the Bristol Channel was created in the early days and the rest of the four nations did not follow? Personally, I'd like all the defunct sub-forums removed and something more up to date created.

What?

Get rid of the 2004 Weymouth get-together, the Cherbourg Cruise AND the Mercury Marina meet from the same year?

Next you'll be suggesting removing the 2006 Christmas Panto thread!

I think the Bristol Channel forum was created because the area has its own yachting association (the Bristol Channel Yachting Association Welcome to the BCYA website - BCYA). This probably made sense in the early days of YBW when the website builders were looking to define forums around tangible yachting ‘entities’ associated with wide areas and multiple clubs.

Times have changed and we’d be better served perhaps by forums reflecting coherent cruising areas (as reflected by the way the pilot guides are organised, say) rather than geographical home bases. A ‘Bristol Channel and Irish Sea’ forum would do nicely for the west coast cruising grounds south of the Clyde and the western Scottish islands perhaps.

The NW mob consisted of mainly North Wales based mobo owners with a sprinkling of yachties. The common theme was sharing their knowledge of a challenging Cruising area, sharing their good spirit both of the mind and out of a bottle! There were some very memorable forum meets.
Many members are still around but use other social media rather than this very outdated forum.
I think if you are looking to make more contact with like minded local boaters in the NW of England then creating a closed Facebook group such as Sailing and Cruising NW might give you a better chance.
I find the closed groups for Scotland and Wales are really useful for all areas of the Irish Sea and will give you some coverage for your chosen new Cruising base.

Could argue why there is not a solent forum due to the huge number of boats?
Does it really matter as why remove yourself from the main forum where there is more activity.
I always click " what's new" so always see new posts regardless of what sub forum they are hidden in.
