Forum\'s, a very useful tool indeed!

Hello Everyone
Just finished reading a story about a poor chap 'up north' who was unfortunate enough to have his car stolen last month.
What is of intrest to us boating types is the fact that the guy was a regular on a forum dedicated to performance cars and car modifications.
The simplified story goes:
-thief turns up in response to the cars for-sale advert in well known magazine and, after catching the car owner unaware makes of with his pride and joy.
-Within a half hour of the theft, a thread is posted on the forum with the vehicle details and a description of thief.
-three hours later sightings are made of the vehicle at a forecourt in Mansfield
-The following day, more posts apear on the forum of the vehicle being spotted in Doncaster. Rumours abound as to where the vehicle is headed
-Later on the same day, the guy recieves an e'mail saying a trucker spotted his car in a motel car park at Scotch Corner.
-The following day, a post is made to confirm that a quotation for a respray was given to a vehicle matching the stolen cars description. The vehicle is now in Dumphries.
-two days later the car is finally reported in Carlisle where it is 'rolling road' blocked by police and the thief arrested.

In 5 days, the car had its number plate changed, identifiyng stickers/badges removed and had covered nearly 4700miles but thanks to the forum and the help of all that used it, the vehicle was recoved with only minor damage.

I realise that in the case of a boat, the first port of call would probably not be somewhere in the UK however, considering how many of us make frequent trips abroad, i dont see why this forum couldnt have a similar success story to tell.

Although still new to this,i would like to think that we all read what appears in the "stolen' forum therefore its nice to know that, should your pride and joy disapear one night, there is a valuable network of like minded individuals out there keeping an eye out for your property.

A valuable tool indeed!
Regards.
Simon

Trouble is that while cars have to stay on roads and have number plates, yachts can sail anywhere, and it's only if someone happens to see a similar vessel in port that questions could be asked. On top of that, most of the posters hereabouts have other things to do during the week, unlike on the road where there are people moving about while making their living.

There was a post on here a few weeks back from Colvic, whose boat was stolen, never to be seen again, so while I agree that there is value in using fourms as you suggest, there may not be the same success rate as with cars.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't try though.

yes, it does work. my tri was stolen from the medway in 1978. a message was placed in Multihull International (remember the pre-web days?). a reader spotted her off the east coast of denmark and the thief was arrested in sweden.
