Ford 1.8 Marinised diesel starting problems.

Maybe all you barrack room mechanics need to consult subject matter. Principally, Harry Ricardo and indirect injection. Suggest Wikipedia being a good source.

On my Thorneycroft t110, I have to leave the ignition key in the "preheat" position for a further 15 to 20 seconds after the ignition light goes out (which only takes 4seconds) in order to start the engine. Does this mean that the relay is faulty?

Put a meter on the plugs and see. It sounds like a timer problem, but if the timer cuts out after 4secs, then holding it on should make no difference.

On switches, I had a problem on a 4 pot Yanmar. Very sluggish starter, owner said it has been like that for a while. Checked the plugs, no current, but relay tested OK. It was the switch. But looking at the price(!!), delivery and timing, I just put a push button with a smaller relay to activate the big one and all was well.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll check each plug tomorrow. If they are OK, how do I check the switch?

Plugs all 1.2 to 1.4ohms
Also carried out voltage check at plugs as ignition turned on: voltage 12.6 after 4secs light out but v unchanged.
Further 16secs and v dropped off to 0.
Guessing relay fault? Not causing a problem as long as I count to 20secs. Will change relay on next trip (boat is in Sardinia).

Sorry, didn't see your post 44. But you answered it in 45. Switch must be OK if you get readings.

Where in Sardinia? I have fond memories of the North. Stayed in Porto Raphael and fixed up a boat in the port along the coast. Commuted by ski boat as the roads were slower and a bit dicey then. Still had bandits operating ('69)
