Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

A couple days ago we had wheelie bins sailing past at 12kts. Now they're flying past at 30kts.

And my Westclox Big Ben says its 992mb.

Does it need to be re-calibrated?

Does it need to be re-calibrated?

Depends where on the west coast you are.

1720 Wx...Benbecula 180 57 gust 79 QNH 960
Glasgow 210 34 gust 52 QNH 988
Prestwick 200 30 gust 44 QNH 990

I'm sorry for friends in the North but as they say, it's an ill wind, etc.
My boat floated off the beach this morning at 0600. I've been trying to get afloat for 3 months ever since the October storm surge put her up there. That was the storm that flooded Flushing.

Re: OK it\'s now officially wild

and blowing a real hoolie...

Re Westclox big Ben calibration I belive it takes 39 Steps

Re: Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

Our power went off three hours or so ago and I had to wade to the shop thigh deep to get some batteries for the radio - tide was at least 4ft up on normal Spring levels.

Don't know what he wind speed is but it's pretty breezy - hope the boat is still there in the morning and not in a bunker on the golf course.

Re: Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

Salty sea water.

Phone line still works with the power off, and ther laptop had some charge in it.

Power has - remarkably - come back on in the last ten minutes. Didn't really expect it back on before tomorrow, so well done the Hydro Board.

Trying to decide whether I want to go down to the pier and shine headlights on the boat to see if it's still there or not. In a way no news is good news, and if there's a problem there's no way I could get out to the boat anyway.

I see Oban's just been on the national news . . .

Hi

Would go down and check for your own piece of mind. I have spent nights sitting
at the harbour watching my boat ride out storms. Its better to see whats going on
rather than sitting at home restless thinking the worst.

Nick,

I'm on the hard at Dunstaffnage. The report from Oban was a bit worrying.

Nip down to the marina while you're out and see what's going on willya?

Re: Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

Dunstaffnage will have done a decent job of shoring up or cradling and I don't reckon the gusts are more than 70 knots here, a mere bagatelle compared to Stornoway!

Would be more worried if I was still afloat at Dunstaffnage, I think - it can get pretty wild in there in a good Westerly blow!

Just checked Fairwinds, and she's still in the same place and looks OK, so I'm a bit more optimistic now.

Re: Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

I've just seen Oban on the news and I'd stay in if I were you. Nowt you can do and its forecast to get worse. Check it out tomorrow when its light.

Re: Force 12 and 948 mb NW Scotland

glad to hear you're still afloat.. the boat that is... hope your house is dry..
Worst damage here so far is the roof (knackered corrugated iron and due for replacement anyway) on the woodshed. Obviously we've still got power...but will be setting manual alarm clock just in case;)
