Excellent David.

Dingies, MoBo's, Bouys and even, cough splutter, one of those pwc things!!

:D:D:D:D:D

Yes, it was very nice on the South Coast today. :)

thanks for those - mooring fees due soon reminds me what I'm paying for

First phantom was one of my clients, llula a 40 from swanwick marina, the other a p48 with fenders hanging (they obviously never went to 5star school)

Those dinghies were out racing yesterday. Aside from the blooming starter gun making me jump every 5 minutes...they gave me kittens trying to get out of the Hamble! All over the shop they were and nothing to do but hold my course and hope they didn't cut too close across me. My legs were like jelly.:eek:

Maybe you should build on this experience, and consider tackling Chichester Harbour :-)

Is that worse then?

To be honest no, Hamble during the winter series is hell, start line is across the main channel, so it is terrible. I was busy antifouling and could hear the starting guns go off and TBH was kinda smiling to myself as to the chaos they could be causing! My guesstimate from the number of starting guns is they had 3 class races starting 30 seconds apart.... and you do not want to fight your way through that. Chichester in comparison is a walk in the park, much more room for starters !!

There was some poor guy some way behind us in a mobo who was just surrounded by them and couldn't get free for love nor money! Must've taken him ages to get out not to mention in one piece! Out of interest, what happens if one of them clips you? Apparently the HM said we had right of way in those circumstances due to draught or something like that. I wouldn't hold my course just coz the ruling that day says its my right of way, I would avoid if poss but saturday you had to trust to luck a bit that they were gonna keep out of your way tbh.

It can be, and often is, a nightmare. And they're sooooooo rude with it. Last year, after I was told to f**k off by one, and then got "the finger" from a 15 year old (?) girl in another, I've been looking for one of those toy hand grenades to lob at them, but have yet to get one :-)

They're the equivalent to London cyclists, except in a lot of cases much younger (but, believe me, they know all the rude words)

great idea! i have a box full of them!!!

Some are rude for sure but often you get a nice wave from them if you keep out of their way (i cant believe i am typing this!)

i dont blame the sailors as much as the people who set the course.

Open up and give em some wash Richard ;)

+1

I was surround last year by around 30. Not much wind so I kicked the boat in to neutral as there was no way I could avoid or steer around them and they all sailed by with a friendly wave and smile... but all occurred at zero speed. The problems get greater when there's blow and they are all doing 8knots+

Exactly. 8Kts plus, when there's an 8 Kt speed limit. Which, apparently they're exempt from, and only applies to power driven vessels, although it doesn't exactly say that, on the big red can as you enter the harbour, of course.

It was 'orrible. I was a guest onboard a friend's boat and it was getting silly at some points. I said to my friend (yes, I do have some:rolleyes:) hold your course, there is nowhere else to go and and you are now constrained by draft. Trouble is the dingy blokes don't know what that means! One particular flappy thing - with a woman at the tiller came straight at the side of the boat when we were already so far over to starboard that any further we would be aground and there was no room to move to port even if we had wanted too. Boats coming into the river were also being restricted and I thought at one point a yacht was actually go to mow two dingys down - again not his fault.

Where was the patrol launch? Nowhere! And you were right, the starter bangs were going off every 30 secs. Oh and the race marks were in the middle of the river as well. There was not a lot of wind yesterday either so the fleet was not exactly making a fast pace.
