...Bit of a long shot but a friend has just posted this picture of a Bilge Keeled boat, mastless, that has washed up on the shores of Loch Fyne. It would appear to have broken its mooring.
Perhaps if someone knows the owner or someone locally based they may be able to get in touch with the owner in time for the boat to be saved from serious damage.

Thanks.

That is the boat which has sat on one of the 4 Loch Fyne Oyster Bar Mooring for years, all year, so must be local to around there. I could be wrong but it looks like that one. It may also be a previously abandoned boat, tied up to the visitors moorings. There are a couple more, about the same size, that just sit on their moorings all year, looking unused.

Thanks BoB,

I thought it might be something like that with the mast situation etc. I just hate seeing boats getting mashed up on shorelines.
Let's hope some of the locals head out and recover it to safety.

Best wishes,

Just looked at my photos from mid September when I passed by there and you are of course correct, with that boat sitting mast-less on the “visitor“ mooring. (It was the only boat on the moorings there at the time)
I see the pickup buoy is still on board so assume the mooring strop from the big blue buoy failed. I wonder if / when these visitor moorings were last inspected?

The owners (the oyster restaurant?) may have little desire to service a mooring upon which an abandoned boat is squatting.

I used those moorings 10 years ago and back then they didn't look like they had been serviced for many years. There were also problems getting ashore due to the heavy shoreline vegetation. I spoke to the Loch Fine Oyster Bar about them but they just weren't interested, so I was left with the impression that they might not be theirs. Its a shame because we had a great time exploring Loch Fyne to its start - I suspect most visiting boats go no further than Otter Ferry.

Shame about the boat - it no doubt was someone's pride and joy in the past.

It was on the mooring on Sunday when we passed. Over the years it has gone from fully rigged to losing sails, boom, mast and all other fittings by the looks of it. The owner probably saw the mooring as the no cost option to get rid of it unfortunately. Possibly similar to the one that went up on the shore opposite Inveraray a good number of years ago and has been sitting there ever since.

The Oyster Bar has changed ownership since those moorings went in, I think the community involvement ceased then. I suspect the current management are just not interested. They are used so infrequently that you can understand that but they really should lift them rather than let them go to the bottom.

We sailed up to those moorings once with the intention of staying overnight. Upon arrival we quickly realised that being in the centre of a traffic merry go round was not much fun, compared to anchorages further south in the Loch those moorings are rather like dropping anchor at Watford Gap......

Small GRP boats are effectively worthless in that state, it's been abandoned; could be the owner died or simply didn't want it anymore.

Can’t someone quietly tow it out and scupper it ?
We don’t want to drop plastic rubbish at the bottom of the loch do we? Get it ashore, give it to the local Scouts group? Or chop it up and dispose of it? I appreciate that costs money but we can’t just dump stuff in the loch.

It's a bit of a hike to get to the head of the loch, by sea and it dries out quite far. It would not worth the time to get there. Likely easier to attach a winch line and haul it to the road side for a Hiab to pick up. It will probably sit there for a long time.

Really needs a chainsaw. Wonder what the keels are made of? I did look at the other boat ashore in L Fyne but she wasn't lead keeled either...
