Foolhardy?

I haven't read the article either but I can't help wondering at some of the articles that come out of YM recently. Apart from the Learning Curve column I get the impression that YM may be pushing the "sensationalist" stuff a bit. You know, the seat of the pants stuff, some high drama, but everything works out fine in the end.

What happened to the joys of sailing days, no dramas, gentle breezes, and safely home? A couple of years ago there was a delightful column called Sailing Home. Really enjoyed it as it captured the true essence of sailing, and how it should be.

Maybe...

...the new editorial regime will see a change from the sensationalist stories(that face it are more suited to the Sun than a yachting magazine), back to the more gentle tales of how it really is for 90% of the sailing population of this country!

OK, the exciting stuff does happen, and when it does, most of us have the common sense not to push our luck too far but this particular story is one that depicts plain unadulterated stupidity!

Re: Foolhardy? and dangerous

I've read the article now, and have to say I totally agree.

This would be a tale of heroism and derring-do in the unlikely event of factors conspiring to make a safe landfall at Milford Haven or anywhere else W. of Lands End impossible - but that patently wasn't the case on this occasion.

I've been awake for far too long at sea when I had to be - through poor planning or just circumstances - but I would never set out to do it deliberately in those conditions with a sick crewmember on board. It only takes one thing to go wrong and you have the potential for a major incident.

I'm a bit surprised that this was published without comment. Perhaps someone from IPC would care to comment here?

Hope the bloke who wrote it has been reading this forum - it might stop him doing it again now he realises that the general response isn't one of open-mouthed adulation. Fortunately he got away with it, and to his advantage has gained a lot of insight into his own limits - let's hope he can now add a bit of imagination and 'what if' thinking to the overall picture.
