Folding tables

Has anyone ever come across a design for a saloon table that folds/drops down to the sole? It would seem to be an elegant and tidy place for the thing when not needed, and as long as it's stout and you give it a good wipe down before dinner I can't see why not. Also, NYACHILWA apparently had one in the first place - I just dont have the construction details.

Dr. Tom Harrison Butler designed a very good one for his yawl 'Vindilis'. I believe that it worked well. I suspect that it would be mentioned in his book on Cruising Yacht Design.

I have seen one that stows up the way, at the deckhead, leaves a handy pole to grab hold of, in a sea.

The Virgo Voyager used the table on a pole sliding up out of the way. I think one of the mags has reviewed it this month. Is it something that could have been in the PBO sketchbooks?
The pole may give the option of rotating the table for efficient storage or use. The pole is off centre and as stated earlier is a very useful handhold. On visiting it did not get in the way nor did it add to the scars on the cranium. If you have a keel stepped mast the 'pole' may be in place.

Not only is Harrison Butler's drawing for just such a table in his book, which is in print,. but his daughter, Joan Jardine Brown, who is President of the HB Association can advise on exactly how it works.

I have one on my SHE 32 - it folds lengthwise and then pivots up just behind the mast. There is a stainless steel leg which you bolt to the underside with butterfly nuts - works well even if the 70s formica is looking a little dated!

How much does it protrude from either side of the mast? does it restrict access much?

I have a keel stepped mast, and no saloon table, and have been considering this option....

No it is fine - it buts up against a small column of cubby holes which sit just to the left of the mast. Like your blog BTW!
