My admiralty charts come folded in half, and go into the chart drawers like that. They have a brief time on the back seat of the car before they get to the drawers.
We used to have to mail our prints of building or engineering plans up to A0 size. The requirement was that they fitted in an A4 envelope and could be unfolded to any location for examination of any part out on site on a windy day. It was simple really, you just concertinaed them horizontally and then put in one or more horizontal folds. For A1 (8xA4) or smaller which was our preferred plan size, you did one fold across the width and then concertinaed the horizontal strip with four folds.
When it was bigger than A1 and you needed a second horizontal fold it did not lend itself well to windy weather handling, it was easier as all our prints were one sided.
