Re:Balsa

I thought that only Beneteau used the structural grid method.
Jeaneau laminate wooden floors to their boats and Bavaria use moulded grids also laminated to the hull.At least that's how a friend's Bav(an early one) is built.
I don't know about the other AWBs.

Re: No its not

I remember some years back looking for an Arpege - I was dead keen on getting one.

Walking over the decks produced a sort of crunchy creaking sound. This was the delaminated decks (blasa or foam - not sure). One survey said that because these boats have no main bulkhead, it was esential that the deck remained very strong to stop the shrouds compressing the sides of the hull inwards. Another surveyor (the one who surveyed the boat which I didn't buy, said that it didn't matter - they all had problems and it did not matter. Well I suppose it depends on what you use the boat for. A hard slog accross the channel..... I stopped looking at Arpeges and wondered about surveyors and their ideas about structure!

Re:Structural Grid Method

Agreed - Beneteau use this method only gluing the grid. A large number of producers use the grid method, some fully bonding in and others only gluing. It would be interesting to to find out who does what.
