Flying the Scottish red ensign

Can't see any point in this post - I sometimes can't be bothered with any flags whether legal or no. Political and should be in the Lounge where it belongs. We had a referendum. Get over it.

Regards
Donald

I fly one. I enjoy seeing where people come from be it region, county or country. I do not judge them or avoid them based on where they are from. If someone is from further afield I am more inclined to chat to hear their story on who they ended up here. I'm all so more inclined to assist them with local knowledge when I can.

I am saddened/disappointed by the attitude of some on here.

Best to fly an existing country ensign IMO, rather than an imaginary one that really is a region.

Might as well fly it as courtesy flag in Tenerife in the Canaries, which is the same as the Scottish flag.

Have you considered getting a bigger one?

I rather like the Dutch style of huge ensigns almost brushing the water, but stick to a three-quarter yard one on the traitional "one inch of ensign per foot of boat" principle.

Spotting an idiot from further afield can only enhance my situational awareness.

Well, that's me told. Again. I can hardly see through the tears.

If that is your opinion then of course you should follow it, just as I follow mine.

We are discussing the Scottish merchant flag / Scottish red ensign, not the saltire. Mind you, I notice that a lot of visiting vessels - recreational and commercial - now use a saltire as a courtesy flag. That's very nice of them, though it's perfectly OK not to.

Is the current windy weather responsible for all these ensign threads? Personally I love them, flags and ensign threads, so much emotion over the colour of a flag, so much pride taken in the good old red duster or a mercantile flag, or the saltire or the burgee and blue brigade. And I love the sneer at those who fly a blue to match the fenders, but why not!

How long till we see this flag defaced with a 'yes' badge?

Some people need to learn when to move on.

All this still does not get away from the fact that if flying a flag with a blue background with a white soltaire means "I am not under way and I am not in control" i.e. I am drifting without direction. Code flag M.
If you are not in that situation you should not be flying it. Full stop!

Yes, you it would seem.

The Scottish red ensign is an historical flag that predates the current 'red duster' - prior to 1707 it was flown by ships of the Royal Scots Navy. It is nothing to do with the referendum.

I am astounded that this subject has raised so much bile. I was merely commenting that a lot more Scottish yachts are choosing to fly it this year.

How often do you think confusion arises in this matter? More or less often than a tug is send out to assist a race committee boat flying a Z?

It's no longer a Scottish Red Ensign, although it's a flag that is relevant as a historical item. People keep telling me that I need to get over the "collapse" of the British Empire - I think this falls in the same category. It is not an ensign and, if you believe you are flying it as one, then you are in same category as someone who believes he is really a Roundhead when he re-enacts the civil war. There's no harm in flying it but why do you need to pretend it's still an ensign? It's like going around pretending the Conservatives were in power whilst Labour were, basically delusional.

You don't really need to be able to see for my benefit as I will have spotted you as an idiot and made allowances. That is the beauty of it.
