flush mounting Garmin Echomap

I have recently bought Garmin Echomap UHD2 95SV and wish to flush mount it on the outside of the cabin (cockpit wall) of my Nicholson 26, roughly where my hand shadow is in the photo.
Would this weaken the cabin? Would I have to strengthen the new hole with fibreglass tape and resin to prevent fracturing?
Has anyone done this?
I am loathe to use the provided plastic hinged mounting as I can see it getting in the way and being easily knocked and broken
Thanks

Many people fit their various displays in that area ...........

My 92sv is :

As you see - there is also the flush mount compass above it .....

Thanks. Did you cut a large hole for the Garmin? Did you reinforce it at all?

It was already fitted by Toro Yard in Sweden for previous owner ... it has no extra backing or re-inforcement ...

If you cut the hole yourself - make sure you apply epoxy resin to the raw cut edges to seal the GRP laminate ... it is not unusual for 'dry spots' to be ...

My boat has two compass ... one either side of companionway ... and they read about 10 deg different !!

Am I bothered ? No - because if I have to steer by compass to make a 'landfall' - I steeer as per prudent navigator rule ... upstream of desired point .... the compass then becomes a relative reference ...

No doubt some amateur navigator will now tell me how to do my job !!

I'm planning to do the same when I can decide which plotter to get....

100% I will reinforce the area with foam and epoxy laminate. I've watched a number of Youtube videos and some do some don't.

Refit and sail, he doesn't but the area he fits the plotter is small and plenty of curves to give strength.

Sailing Uma does as their area is quite large and flexes.

Mine will be similar to Sailing Uma's so will need reinforcing.

Likewise, and I’m embarrassed to say that in
four or five years of owning the boat I have never even removed either cover. Ten minutes after some nefarious state turns off the GPS satellites my boat will be in pieces on the rocks, and serves me right really.

I very rarely steer by compass heading, but it’s in use about every 10 seconds when sailing on the wind. Do you smell the wind or something?

No reinforcement there. It would be difficult for there to be structural forces with the hatch that close. The stress is carried by the mainsheet traveller, aft of that. Just think about it before cutting.

Thanks to all - held my breath and made the cut - then added fibreglass tape and resin to the inside of the cut. I was amazed at how thick and strong that part of the boat is.
Now I need to work out how to use it - the Quickstart guide that came with the unit isn't really a comprehensive manual. Any advice on this?
