I just came across an advert for Flexiteek Marine Decking, and I have to say it looks quite smart and a nice way to spruce up the cockpit and swim platform on an old boat (or a new one for that matter)

I was just wondering if any of you have used it, how durable it is, and what sort of cost it is (there doesn't seem to be any prices on the website and for a quote they require all manner of measurements)

You can even have your boats name laser engraved into it :)

Or if anyone knows of a better alternative, feel free to holler ;)

I just had fexiteak fitted on my new to me sunseeker as the old teak was worn beyond saving although she is only seven years old, just shows how thin the original teak must have been, I'm very pleased with the result, most people can't believe it's not real teak the only time it's obvious is when it's wet. I also had it on my last boat and it lasted really well with no wear in the seven years, the latest stuff it also a lot better with better uv protection so little or no colour change.

I had Flexiteek fitted around 4 years ago - despite my laziness in not cleaning it, condition is great.

If you are anywhere near Port Solent, you are welcome to have a look

From memory, my cockpit, side deck and bathing platform was £2K

My boat is a Beneteau Flyer 8.

Thanks for the offer, I might well take you up on it if I'm in the area ;)

£2k seems like a reasonable price given the size of the cockpit on the Flyer 8 :encouragement:

While not a mobo we have had Flexiteak fitted from new on side decks and cockpit instead of going for teak with worries about wear and raised grain and screw plugs and caulking etc. We decided to have factory fitted having seen another yacht of same class/size retro fitted in UK on delivery. We haven't really had to maintain at all . We clean and Semco our cappings and toerail so it retains its matching colour but that's a much smaller area. We just have to treat Flexi with patio magic to remove winter green in the spring but that is quite simple. I have seen the UK Flexiteeak team retrofitting on a new Hanse at Hamble Point so if you are interested in viewing process they might be inclined to tell you when they are retrofitting one again and show process etc.

Have had for nearly 18 months and very happy with it . Also if the sun does shine doesn't seem to get as hot underfoot as real teak . I don't know how it compares with other makes of teak look coverings but we found a wide range of colours . In terms of price I guess it depends on work involved . Many don't seem to realise its not real based on comments we have had btw.

Thanks all for the replies. It's definitely something I'm going to research further having read the positive comments from you all :)

I have it and it is fantastic.
It's the only one afaik that has colour variations in the plastic which makes it look very real. If it gets scratched you can sand it, and the colour goes right through.
When it gets grubby you can jetwash it.
I wouldn't go back to regular chemical cleans and stains from dropped food. Even a crisp stains real teak.
The only thing I miss is the smell of wet teak.
The quality of the job is all in the detail of the fitting though.

I have yet to see a plastic teak deck that cannot be spotted for what it is – especially when wet.
I have also see some truly awful jobs that have presumably been DIY fitted . I would say the job is only as good as the care put into the design and installation – no matter what the material.

Mine looks very realistic. But if you can spot its not wood, who cares? The question is do I like the look. Yes I do.
And I bet it looks way better than any real teak after lunch with a load of kids on board.
If you don't like the look, stick to your dead tree and regular chemical cleans.

Well that's the first negative comment so far, which is fair enough if you don't like it - no different to real floorboards versus laminate flooring in a house really ;)

But either way, real or fake, it has to be a damned sight more pleasing on the eye having fake teak, than having to look at this mess :D

Couldn't see the images without registering, which I duly did, and as soon as I logged in, I got the following message, which I thought was very friendly, for what reason I have no idea, I've never visited that forum in my life...
