The boat I have re4centyly taken over has a hob grill and oven which is a Flavel B700C. This has a flame failure mechanism. There were no instructions for this with the boat merely the installation instructions.

When I tried to light the oven I pressed the button below the oven flame control knob for a short while but could not get the oven to stay alight. Eventually I held the button in to a count of 300 but still it cut out.

Does anyone on here have a guide for this stove or know how to use it? I have tried the Flavel website but they only list their domestic kit not the older yacht/ camping kit.

I have a nasty feeling that the flame failure device may have failed.

Calor Gas used to clean and repair these stoves. The flame failure device will be a standard item for many stoves.

Isn't the forum padre an expert on these cookers ?

Check that the burner is clean and that the tip of the Thermocoulpe is a nice cheery red, if it isn't then it is not properly in the flame or the flame is too cool.
if it is red then either the Thermocouple needs replaced or the electromagnet in the FFD needs replaced.

Thanks for this. Presumably I could use a wire brush on the burner in situ? Whereabouts would I find the thermocouple?

The burner runs in a cutout in the floor of the oven at the rear, the T/couple runs perpendicular across the top of the burner.
When burning correctly should have an even and blue flame that may be slightly higher at one end (this is the flame trap to stop the flame going out when turned down low).
And as above can be cleaned with a pad or light wire brush and a puff of breath through a thin hose to clean any loose debris out of the burner (not a compressor).

Don't bother cleaning the thermo couple (flame failure device), as when its in the heat it should be clean as the flame will burn all dirt off it. There are 2 easy things to do first.

1. Get a pair of pliers and grip hold of the tip of the thermo couple (flame failure device) and pull it up , the most common failure is that its fallen out of the flame, so not getting enough heat. By pulling it up a little it should place it back into the flame.
2. Get an 8mm spanner & tighten up the nut on the end of the thermo couple which goes into the valve on the back of the gas knob. This ensures that the circuit is intact.

Failing that you will need to buy a new one. I used to fit these universal ones to the old cookers when the originals weren't available, found here: http://www.groveproducts.co.uk/produit.asp?id_prod=QQ070215 They look like this:

Easy enough to do with a little patience.

Breize.

As above clean the burner not the T/couple
As I said make sure the T/couple is in the flame and getting red hot. Do not bend the tip of the T/couple as this will cause the inner and outer metals to touch stopping the circuit.
The other end needs to be hand tight plus about a turn, if you over tighten this connection you will crush the washer between the inner and outer wires (think coax) and this will also cancel the "signal" (millivolts).

I have an electronic copy of the user manual for the Flavel Vanessa stove, not identical but very similar. If you feel it may be of use, then PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Rob.
