Flags at Half Mast - UNESCO Commemoration of the First World War Centenary

So, a mention of respect for people who gave their all so that we could live in peace and freedom and have forums like this, degenerates into arguing about who's the best smart-arse with flags; I hope those who died for us are grinning wryly as they look down, this is what you fought for guys, and thankyou !
Well said, thank you.

Shame this wasn't more widely publicised - only 3 or 4 boats at Bembridge this afternoon have their ensigns half masted. I am sure lots more would do this were they aware of the Notice to Mariners requesting it.

Will be making our sound signal at 18.00 BST (17.00 GMT - sorry my forebears didn't fight for UTC).

superheat,

well done, I'm not sailing this weekend or would be doing the same.

It has been reasonably publicised, the Facebook site about Dunsfold & Kingston BAe where I used to work has mentioned today with a giant flag, several hundred members; don't know if councils are doing anything in town centres, but they ought to be.

OK mate, no problem. Prepare yourself for incoming every time you step off topic.

BTW, I think I have been closer to 'giving my all' than you have. I will also bet the farm that I have laid more wreaths on more memorials that you have.

Well, I've just been an gone an done it here in Marina de Lagos.

Never felt so lonely in my life.

Actually, some guy did reply, but I think it was 'cos he was pissed off with the noise I was making.

Uh, oh.......here come the Policia Maritima...............

There are military procedures, but there are not any daft military procedures.
When military procedures are blindly adopted by civilians who then go on to hold that said procedure is THE way to do something, yes there are many daft military procedures... and allegedly "correct" half-mast procedures are in that number.
Ditto civilians insisting there's a correct and incorrect side to wear a poppy.

There seem to be 2 threads running almost the same conversation here, so here's my post from the other for the

Origins, whys and wherefores of modern international warfare starting with WW1.
Nobody liked Ferdinand that much.

Two of us lowered ensigns in Falmouth, as far as I could see. One large ship sounded a signal, four of us blew horns, and a blind man on a neighbouring boat played a sustained note on his clarinet.

Big ship sounded prolonged horn at Avonmouth, and one ensign at half mast in Portishead

We gave the prescribed prolonged horn here on there the Orwell, scared the pants off the French catamaran that was passing. Shame though, doesn't seem to be a lot of support.

I think it's generally known that today is the anniversary of an upper-crust billionaire aristocrat/'royal' parasite being done over, rather than the industrial slaughter of actual real people, which came a bit later..
