Flag for Yacht Club

At the mast head you fly the club burgee.

On the peak of your flagstaff you fly the red ensign unless your club holds a warrant in which case you fly the associated ensign (defaced or undefaced blue or red, except Royal Yacht Squadron who fly the white ensign).

To JMKent - as far as HRSC goes, do as I say not as is what is there now . . . !!!

'Full members of Royal Nortumberland Yacht Club whose vessel is registered on either the Part I or Part III (small ships) register, and satisfies certain measurement requirements may apply to the Vice Commodore for a permit to wear the Club's special Ensign - a blue ensign defaced with the badge of the club, the Percy Lion. Permits are issued under the conditions of a Warrant granted to the Club by the Secretary of State for Defence.

The defaced blue ensign may only be worn on a yacht used exclusively for private and personal purposes and when the permit holder in person is in effective command of the vessel. When the Ensign is worn, the Club burgee should also be flown from either the main masthead or 'other suitable position'. When in harbour the ensign should be hoisted at 0800 (0900 between 1 Nov and 14 Feb) and lowered at sunset or 2100 local time if earlier. If you are going ashore and are not likely to return before the relevant time you should adopt the practice of 'early colours' and lower the ensign when you leave the vessel.

Provided the conditions in the permit are met, the ensign qualifies as 'proper national colours' for the purposes of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, s.2.'

Absolutely, and you will find that clubs such as yours are considered to be "ships", in a similar manner to shoreside naval establishments such as BRNC, and thus can fly their ensign on the club flagstaff.

Re: Flag for Yacht Club ....

As a shore Flagstaff ? Then surely you are allowed the Union Flag. The Ensign is just that - an ensign for on-board use.
If you also have a Club Flag - as long as it does not have any part of ensign or country flag in it or contravene anothers flag or be osbcene, can be flown as well on shore.

I assume above - that the flagstaff is shore based not ship.

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Clubs such as ours have a former lightship from the solent for our 'clubhouse'.

The lantern rotted and was removed some years ago.

Re: Flag for Yacht Club ....

Clubs and shoreside naval establishments etc wear the ensign. As clubs etc are considered as vessels I would not wear the union flag on a club flagstaff.

I would not be permitted to fly the red duster on my flagpole at home, but could wear the union flag.

Yacht clubs can also fly appropriate courtesy flags from the yardarm, as a mark of respect for visiting yachts of that nationality.

It's a funny old business!

Sorry for any confusion. My boat lives in Sweden but I also belong to a Yacht or Boat Club close to where I live in Devon.
Swedish Yacht Clubs seem difficult to get to know. Theres usually no permanent bar and events are fairly specialised with the Clubhouse being mostly unoccupied in Summer.
This is based on a small sample - posssibly unrepresentative.

Isn't the Union Jack (i.e. a Union Flag on a jackstaff) only used by Royal Navy vessels when at anchor/tied up alongside?

From mmemory there's another flag which can be flown from the jackstaff of non-naval vessels (a Union Flag with thick white border)
