Five reasons to buy a boat

To counter the recent thread, five reasons not to buy a boat, let's have your five reasons to buy a boat (a bit of positivity for any potential new boat owners out there!).

I'll kick off:

1) A new boat is like a new friend. Treat it right and you will have the best relationship.
2) Freedom. 71% of the earths surface is water - get out there and explore some of it!
3) It's much better than the alternatives (second home, caravan, tent etc).
4) Gives you something to do all year round. If you're not out sailing on it then your probably ashore fixing it.
5) You get to join a wonderful forum like this one...

Adding to 2 & 3, it's the only way save wandering off into the moors or heading up a mountain with a tent that you can spend a night or several in the wilderness anchored up part of nature.
 
First Mate and I find your reasons-bar the forum one-bang on.

We recently entertained two old friends, who, despite being past retirement age are running about like BAF's for work, and in her case, family.

After five days of living on our boat they both told us that they now get what we see in being aboard for most of the summer.

They both said they had not felt so chilled out for years............................................

We get told that all the time with friends without boats , not so much with our friends who have boats :)
Another reason to have a boat is you won't have to worry about your money not being safe in the bank , as you won't have any to worry about haha
 
Here are my five reasons:
1) It's infinitely more enjoyable than camping
2) Sealife
3) Nothing beats arriving at your destination by boat
4) Knowing you could just keep going and going and going
5) You can be absolutely uncontactable if you want
 
Your children learn that if they don't obey orders there are more creative sanctions and punishments that can be imposed on them.

Rum tastes better.

You keep numerous businesses going by having to pay inflated prices.

Fray Bentos!

You learn your limtations.
 
xyachtdave's 5 alternative reasons for newbies to get a boat.....

1) You can now spend all day on YBW telling everyone your boat is of a much higher quality, faster, can handle a blow better, etc etc than everyone else's and advise any newbie to get what you've got....regardless of the criteria/budget given by the poster. When you get bored of that there's the lounge or start an anchor thread!

2) Take your new boat racing and you'll get to say some really cool stuff like 'Gust coming in 3' or you can stare at the horizon and say something like 'Yeah, pressure of 5', see if anybody notices you're just making it up as you go. Don't forget yelling 'Starboard!' at anything that comes with in 1/2 a mile!

3) You can now dress like a proper Yachtie, you've got a boat! Branded technical fast wicking clothing, a baseball hat with the name of a serious offshore yacht race on the peak (doesn't matter if you've done the race though!), some shades and of course leather sailing boots.

4) Now you've been sailing once and got your own boat you can get really get stuck into the Yacht Club bar room BS..... '...it was blowing 35 steady, gusting 50 knots and we decided to launch the kite, SOG 25 knots without the tide'. Double the gusts you see on your wind indicator, 21 knots on your Raymarine means Beaufort F10 at the bar.

5) Offer people advice on sail handling, berthing and navigation. You've got your RYA Dayskipper now remember!

1. Never camped under starlit skies?
2. Rust, salt, big waves, seasickness.
3. Except sometimes the price. (but we're shoreline Champers drinkers).
4. Not really.
5. YES!

1. They’re cheaper than a mistress and I have a better chance of getting my wife to join in the fun.
2. I get sea-sick, so in our own boat we decide when to go out or come back.
3. Boats are made for fishing from.
4. They are more interesting to reverse than a caravan.
5. All the little jobs to be done justify regular weekend visits to the floating shed where tea drinking and chatting with the neighbours distract from the jobs until next time.

You get to read and participate in various fora and observe a variety of human life afloat and online which would otherwise past you by. It's just brilliant to view the posts of others IMHO and gain insight into lives and disparate views . Hugh entertainment in some posts plus Hugh knowledge in others.
 
Because charter boats deserve a sanctuary to live out their lives
Because Ryanair may get in a strop so you need your holiday home to move quicker
Because your turquoise swimming pool should be shared with other peoples kids having fum and their parents driving the dinghy home at midnight singing
Because being in the middle of nowhere at night alone on watch is impossible to describe even to the next person coming up to take over
