Fitting Ocean Safety RORC Danbuoy?

Any thought on this much appreciated. We are new to yachting and as part of speccing our boat I bought the above danbuoy. Beginning to regret I did now and am even contemplating trying to sell/exchange. I've tried contacting Ocean safety and the advice from there was as much use as an ash tray on a motor bike. No more OS products for me!!

Anyway, the DB is approx 6' stowed and has a hefty quite large diameter metal weight at the foot of the pole, it must be nearly 2" in diameter. Most DBs I've seen are fitted either to purpose built mounts or are stowed in lengths of plumbing pipe. Many seem to have narrower fittings though allowing use of perhaps 1" dia piping which doesn't look too bad.

Three problems for us are:

1) It seems only gutter style downpipe will be wide enough to take this danbuoy weight.

2) I need someway of closing off or cushioning the bottom to prevent this weight jumping up and puching a hole through my deck as it comes down after a good slam for instance.

3) Not quite sure how I'm best going to fit gutter diameter downpipe to the boat. Don't think jubilee clips are made that long???


Comes of buying chandlery gear to be delivered to the boat before seeing it.

3) Yes Jubilee clips are available as long as you like, or you could go for a lashing with cord.

And/or consider mounting the whole thing at an angle. Many boats have a suitable angled strut on the back stanchion. This often makes it easier to deploy (depends a lot on the exact location), and means it rattles rather than jumps when you fall off a wave.

Plumbing waste pipe comes in 2" diameter which should be OK - it's what I use for my DanBuoy. Comes in grey or black but if lighly abraded can be painted white (Hammerite smooth). Only problem is that you will have to buy 3 metres of the stuff - I'll keep an eye on the "For Sale" forum for a 2.5 metre length of grey 2" waste pipe !!
A bit of foam at the bottom should stop it moving about too much.

Thanks. Our B&Q has the pipe in off white, about £10 for 9'. I'll perhaps use that and cut the rest into pre-made danbuoy mounts for the next boat jumble!

I'll see if I can get some 3" jubilees. Only concern I have with jubilees is that being metal they will fairly soon strip the stainless steel off the pushpit vertical I suspect :-(

Bought a similar danbouy recently and use B&Q downpipe designed for greenhouse gutters, slightly bigger than 2" waste. Heavy duty tywraps were used as fixings and work well.

May look at that. Are tywraps the same as cable ties?
