Hello all, can anyone advise how to go about fitting a rev couter to a Yanmar 2GM20F. Is it connected to a sender on the flywheel or to the alternator? Which is easiest? Any help gratefully received. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If it doesn't have a W contact and you don't have a sender on the block then get one added - far cheaper than the Yanmar sender - the only fun you may have is in calibration .... I used a light sensor rev counter on the flywheel - not cheap kit, but then I just borrowed it ....

Our last boat had a 2GM20 (not the F), which we fitted the yanmar sender at gearbox side of the engine. The engine had a blanking plug which needed to be unscrewed (very tight), with the new sending screwing directly into the hole. A simple wiring job back to the instrument location and we had a rev counter!

It wasn't that expensive and was very easy to fit, with the main advantage being that it was calibrated correctly.

It might be worth contacting a yanmar agent to get a price for this?

Just fitted an electonic one from eBay, 600 to 60000 rpm alarm set, all bells and whistles, brilliant bit of kit. Stuck some heating pipe aluminum tape on flywheel and away it went, foudd it records to the nearest 1oo rpm,so what, at least I can now set to speed. One thing I noticed was that cruising by "ear" was a fuel hungry method, really suprised me how a bit of instrumentation changes one habits. Not all that pricey think I paid £23 including postage.
