I grew up around sailboats and now my boyfriend and I are thinking of fulfiilling my dream and now his about sailing the Pacific Ocean. However we are very yong and very poor, he also has no real knowledge about cruising. We are thinking of a contessa. Anyone who would like to share any tidbits of information or just stories about their first cruise please do!

Firts thing you come across when you head off is people on every conceivable type and size of boat from old folk boats that cost less than £5k to... well big.
Some have all the gear others no electrics a sextant that they learnt to use on the way a watch and an almanac.
we bought an old Bavaria 1991, took two weeks to get her ready and left, you can stay in the UK for too long preparing (and spending money) the best way to find out what you really need is to head off.. most countries other than UK are either the same price wise or cheaper.
As long as the rig and its fixings are sound, the keel bolts etc show no signs of leaks or movement, the rudder is strong and secure and you have a good anchoring set up, as far as I'm concerned thats all you need. Other sort of essentials would be a towed generator/bikes/
We did 10,000 miles in a quick trip of 10 months, and then sold the boat for more than we'd paid for her, as when you live aboard you tend to keep improving things.
We're actually thinking of next time spending far less on the boat probably £25 - 30k
Hope that helps, one other thing once you arrive in a cruising harbour and meet other travellers theres loads of help and advice on hand.

Hi, I had done very little sailing when we bought our boat. 36foot steel Breeon. My partner has sailed all his life and he teaches me all I need to know. I did go to sea school to learn navigation and passed my day skipper ok. A bit daunting first time out but then we were in a force 7 off Portland. Was great tho. have confidence in your boat, read loads of books and stuff and learn as above. On the water.. a bit at a time....... It's just great.......
