Fire at Brighglingsea sailing club

A Victorian sail loft from the big boat era, then the Colne Yacht Club and UESC before the current UCS club - and history prior to that - was a lot of visible internal timber - No big bang and does not appear that anyone was hurt so that is good. Structural Timber surface chars but holds internal strength for a while as can be seen in studs in the video at 50 secs so building can hopefully be restored if internal damage not too severe - particularly as it is listed.

Compliments to the person who reported the fire and to the fire brigade who fortunately are only a couple of minutes drive away.

Boats kept separately so hopefully rowing and sailing won't be affected too much. A good enthusiastic very active club so wish them well.

Looking at the local news blogs, there is strong community support for the club and the rebuild, so it may arise even stronger out of the ashes - it's a community club that enables access to the water at very low cost - and is very well regarded.

OH NO!:cry::cry: I was a student there in the early 1980's. Many happy memories.............though frankly I'm amazed it didn't burn down long ago with the parties we held there! (smoking was allowed indoors then;))........or the walls collapse inwards like a pile of cards due to the number of people inside! Days before H&S and door operatives.

I was an Essex student 79-82, we used the clubhouse a lot for sailing (team racing other visiting universities) as well as the parties. Double decker buses were hired from Eastern National to bring students from Colchester to the parties. A crammed upper floor all leaping about to The Stranglers No More Heroes and it felt as though the floor was bouncing up and down about 18 inches.

Today it’s mostly used by the gig rowing crowd who are very active. I really hope it gets rebuilt but there is a lot of damage. There was a big crane there for a few hours on Friday afternoon which I feared was for emergency demolition due to the structure being unsafe but later it had gone without any apparent change.

As has already been said, very sad hearing about this fire...been to many excellent parties when it was the old UESA.

Hopefully as Egret has said the structure is still sound and it can be rebuilt...as a Grade 2 listed property with any luck it will survive, certainly the spirit in the town seems willing to help in any way possible.
