Looking at a bowline the other day I realised that it's just a sheet bend - just saying

.... and that is when you do a figure 8.That's what it looks like to me when I loosen it up a bit to examine it. I don't have cord to hand but I'm pretty sure that the "holding" part is essentially a sheet bend - the line goes up thru a bight and around and back under itself. Loosen it be have a close look.

I hadn't known till I looked at it. Thanks for confirmingI thought it was well known that a bowline and sheet bend are the same knot, just formed for different purposes. The simplicity of a sheet bend doe leave some people a bit skeptical of its efficacy, so I have pointed this out a few times to reassure them.
Having said that, a sheet bend can be much harder to undo than a bowline when subjected to a heavy load. Must be something to do with the direction that the forces are applied.
