Fifty Feet of Grey (steel)

With your background, what do you think of this system? :)

Thanks JD
Yes, heres my prefered layout.
Have a new naval architect involved, so were moving forwards at leaps and bounds. Sorry about the bad image copy. I have not seen better myself, as the internet here is really really that bad....
Tjis is layout number three. Number was two large double cabins, and layout number one, was a single double master, with two, twins berths, each with ensuite....

New architect is Colin Silvester, and a nice chap too...

happy easter to all,

wont be able to squeeze a full beam master amidships Rob?
Feels a bit odd to built a new craft now and having an empty hull not take advantage of this option?

I know I have a bow master but at 43ft and all the restrictions, there was no other way I could get away with it.
Other than that, it's a nice layout from what I can see.

cheers

V.

I have a two cabin layout, but we had to compromise. Actually the two cabin layout is nice, different....
I should have listened to you chaps earlier when reservations were brought up about the power calculations. Anyway, we cant fit in another cabin full width, so we have a more traditional layout.
Boats these days are more voluminous, more freeboard and generally taller than this, giving them that extra space internally.

Some more up to date photos via the North Sea !!!

<snip>

Some really good progress.

indeed, but I STILL believe I'm slightly ahead of Rob on launch date :p

Is the bow done, last set of pics had some gaps there, is it due to deciding on pocket anchors and such?

Can we also plz have a couple of pics from the centerline of the transom? Still slightly confused on layout there.

cheers

V.

I reckon you may beat me there, to launch date Vas
Unless the big man upstairs floods Wales again :)

The last big plates to go in is now the bow section plates, a few pieces missing from the flybridge, and some inset pieces for the internal bulwark aft.
The tunnels are still yet to be fitted....

Anchor plate not here yet, the yards i have emailed have not replied, so wonder if nauticexpo is not as up to date as it seems....

Ill get the chaps to send me some more pics for you.
Which bit are you stuck on...
We should conclude most of the steel work over the next two weeks. Then its on to the intricate stuff.... What goes where etc etc etc...
Theres about two weeks welding to do yet. This is still just tacked.

Vas, about time for another update from yourself, we're getting withdrawal symptoms!

apologies, next week teaching resumes at the uni, so I'm taking advantage of this week working 10~12h a day but I'm knackered and not in a position to write another small essay with pics :p
should post an update by the w/e, promise.

2weeks to get everything in place and another 2 to fully weld, right?

anchor plates are going to be ss? and welding together with the other mild steel stuff, or slapped on top of them (guess no!)

slightly confused/don't remember well the transom layout, there are two opening with curved steps coming down to the bathing platform, right?

midnight down here I'm off to bed!

Yes, anchor plate will be stainless. Was looking for a anchor pocket, in ss. But, its a bit small. The fifty foot market not really catered for by the specialists. I have sent a number of emails to various stainless fab shops advertising ss anchor hardware and had zero reply. Will look closer to home i think. So, the anchor pocket is out, but trying to find a stainless pool type anchor around 35 to 45 kg...
I think for ease, and actually it really looks well, Mapism looks well neat, and proper... Ship like....

I have ordered several plastic boxes, and not impressed with
If anyone knows of a manufacturer of enclosed boxes, for eg electric shorepower, please let me know. I have some italian, and yes it looks great, but im not so sure of durability, and the chrome effect plastic finish....hhhmmmm
Not really what i am after...

Those tunnels really make sense, the props are nicely tucked up there into the hull out of harms way.

Am I right in saying you don't have a central skeg like on the single screw, as shown on the drawings above?

Yes, the engineering has changed a bit since that drawing. Sorry, im stuck at work and dont have an up to date one with me.
The skeg has gone. We may even gain a knot or two, but the consensus of opinion is bin it.... The design does not warrant it for sure.

Its very shallow on the aft. Props will be 25inch, 4 blade aquaquad. Iirc 87 dar.
We also have a fairly shallow shaft angle. But the tunnels have had a lot of thought going in to them, and are double curvatured.

The shallow shaft angle should give the boat a very level trim angle at cruise, another benefit with tunnels; as well as a gain in efficiency.

....lots of payoff for all the extra difficulty of the fabrication.:)
