Fifty Feet of Grey (steel)

We have 30 sheets of prime shipbuilding steel on its way.
Originally, in 2,4,5, and 6mm 8metre by 2 metre sheets.
Now its all chopped up, bent, rolled and formed...
we have started with 16,640 kg. and ended up with 11,830 kg
Waistage at 28.9%. Should keep the scrap man happy....

That's a good few tins of beans that can be made from the offcuts! Almost 200 posts plus the planning thread and we're almost at the 1st weld - the suspense is tangible and that's just us mere spectators so for you it must be ten times worse! :D Can't wait for the flow of build progress and pictures.

I'm really looking forward to 2014 - with a relaunch of MiToS and this great new build as inspiration (Oh, and not forgetting Match III... ;)), my little project should be a walk in the park...

I am just about getting to grips with it...
The toys were about to be thrown from the pram yesterday after one email reply i had... I wont go in to that though ;)
Anyway, things are moving forwards now.
I have even settled on some nice shiney horns, i have a bow thruster about to be ordererd, through hull fittings... And some lightsfor the gunwhales.....
Antenna are coming, basically, if it bolts on the outside, and needs a hole cutting.....
Major things yet is portholes, in stainless.... Elongated oval type....
Glazing.... Trend, when i get the cad file....
Handrailing... No rush yet...
Still undecided wether flat top and timber, or oval top stainless...

Re. the first, did you eventually decide to go for elec or hydr?
Re. the second, on a steel vessel, oval stainless any day of the week, imho.

wooden top capping will give the boat that extra nice finishing edge,
just came across this pic last night, (pic from Scubaman!)

but when you're up to the varnishing, you might regret it,
talking from experience

A no brainer IMHO -Stainless all the way.
Much less hassle to keep looking great and also really finishes the boat off beautifully.:encouragement:
Looking forward to the thread developing, as you know, I have a bit of an interest in steel and alu boats myself!:)
Happy New Year one and all.
Mike.

stainless will likely get scratched
You must be joking.
Whenever you would hit s/steel with something that can scratch it, what do you reckon that would happen to wood?!?

Anyway, just to better qualify my previous suggestion, I don't disagree that wood looks nice. It always does, on boats.
But on a steel vessel, stainless steel looks almost equally nice, whilst not adding yet another type of maintenance hassle.
Mind, the most no-nonsense finishing for handrails on steel vessels (and it's not a coincidence that it's what you find on most commercial vessels) is just using the same steel and paint of the hull.
But the wish for something nicer is understandable, of course.

Q.

Will it be for personal use or to share online??

Is there a phone line on site ?

Do they have internet that you could access either wireless or via LAN ??

I assume there is power on site.

Do you want to record for security etc or just view online to see progress and therefor not be able to keep any images ??

Video streaming or 30 sec stills ??

Will get my thinking hat on and ask a few peeps at work. There must be some web developer experts on this forum who have done this sort of stuff ???

There is no fixed phone line or Internet. I am sorting out a mifi network though.
But as long as I can connect to a hard drive then thanks fine as its just the historical record really. Not fussed about online.

Confusion reigns.....

Was told steel would be delayed. No reason why, but that was from the haulage company this morning...
Ok, we have waited this long.... No worries.....

Then a very lost, and confused dutch man with a 40ft curtain sider finally stops in Borth, wales, for local knowledge... With12 tons of my steel on board....
Now at the yard,....
Oh well..... Keep the lads busy unloading in the morning.....

We have begun, from pen and paper big boats grow ....... :)
