Anybody know where I can buy fibreglass cloth by the metre?

A winter project is to sheath the underside of the pram dinghy so it can take more scrapping. I need around 3 metres of cloth around 1.5 metres wide.

Roach.
If you remove any gelcoat before re-glassing it will be a much stronger and longerlasting job, whereas if you glass over gelcoat it will eventually fall off.
Sorry I cant help with suppliers down there.

I buy mine from a local flag-pole maker. Far far cheaper than buying anything pre-wrapped in handy sizes...

Look in the yellow pages for a GRP manufacturer local to you and give them a call, many are happy to sell you resins and cloth to offset their own costs. I have bought from around 3 different companies this way. You will have to provide your own containers though.

I live in Cornwall, not 5 miles from CFS. They will supply the cloth you require by the metre. I have purchased cloth of two or three different weights in glass rovings, as well as carbon fibre and kevlar. The roll is about 1.5 metres wide, you can buy it by the metre. They also sell peel ply, polyfilm, polyester resin and epoxy resin/hardener kits as well as all the gloves, pots, cleaner, brushes, spreaders etc. that you might want. There is a catalogue/price list available over the counter, which I expect they would send to you by post, or maybe it is on their website.

If you are glassing over ply you should use an epoxy resin and cloth designed for use with an epoxy, not CSM or you will have a very heavy pram.

Standard resin will not stick to timber in the long term but epoxy will.
Standard resin will not stick very well to cured epoxy resins.

Hope this helps

I have lots of WEST at home. I presume woven glass cloth is woven cloth regardless of resin used?

Err NO.

Standard poly resins and epoxy resins use different binders, Poly resin binders are not dissolved by epoxy resin so end up with a big mess.

Hope this helps.

Woven cloth is woven cloth. No difference as there are no binders used.

Chopped strand matt is the one to watch out for. This is only suitable for use with polyester resin, otherwise you do end up with quite a mess!

Biaxial fabric is my favourite for use with west epoxy. Wets out easy and follows the corners and bends well. End up with a very strong reinforcing layer once cured.

I have used UK Epoxy and CFS before. Both suppliers provided excellent service.

Thanks Alex, you are correct and I did get it the wrong way round, it is the binder in CSM that's a problem for epoxy resins.

Must have been the Styrene fumes from the 18 square metres and 47m x 160mm strips put down just prior to posting.
