It it better seamanship to skuttle the boat. Returning from the OSTAR 2009 i was within 4 miles of the abandened boat when it was found by a fisherman. I would have neen P**** of if i had hit that unmarked lump that night.
It was towed in but was of no value so fisherman owns a wreck !!
The other thing to note is that the vast majority of abandened yachts make it to land eventually. So if its is not actually sinking, if you can stay put it will get better and you can get home. Having said that, there are times when if offered a lift off, it would have been an inviting option.
