Fed up with engineers - I\'ll do it myself....

Had this problem at the end of last season, tilt and trim won't lower into the water. Supposedly had the problem repaired, but it seems, as with everything I've payed this "git" to repair, I now have the same problem again.

I think the motor needs replacing (which it seems he didn't do). When I press the down switch, it makes all the right noises but nothing happens, usually takes about 30 seconds to build up pressure and then it lowers.

Hoping to enjoy the glorious weekend weather, we loaded up for the weekend on Friday and I thought I could override it just for the weekend. Bob the marine engineer in Sandbanks YC (not the same "git") said that if I undid the screw under the bracket about a turn and a half, it would release the hydraulic fluid and I could lower it manually. Eventually, with a little help from my friend Buffalo, we got the screw undone and the bloody thing wouldn't budge!

I've looked at the motor and it doesn't look too difficult to replace, but is this the only problem or do I need to look for something else?

I'd be grateful for any advice you guys can give me.

Engine is Evinrude 70.

hi,
You need to check yyoour hydralic vallve body also ,if valve is stuck no fluid can pass hence no movement, put some fluid bck in,and try tapping it with the pump running.
You should have cracked the hydralic system at the hoses to the rams to let the trim down.
Hope this is a start cos i,am no expert, but have done hydralics, but not familar with your setup

Any fluid in pump.Remove little fill up screw and dip something in reservior (bit of stick/wire anything)to check if any fluid present.
Is it Volvo or Mercruiser.

Depending on the year of your engine will determin how hard it will be. If you have the later type where the motor is mounted on the transom mount, you'll need to reseal it.
If the motor is spinning and the thing won't move, it sounds more like fluid level, pump valving or even that the drive to the pump has gone.

I'm based on the Frome at redcliffe for the next couple of weeks. If you want another pair of eyes to look at it or a second brain thinking about it give me a shout. Me and the kids will e knocking around with the wife in the area. Normally the bankes or red lion in swanage or the quay inn in wareham or off round to lulworth. Basically if theres a watering hole I'll be in one of them at some stage.

If you need contact number give me a PM or ask duncan if you have his.

Thanks Barry, I really wish I knew more, I'm trying to learn fast, Duncan did very kindly offer to help last weekend, but I was still being bloody stubborn with the engineer, and couldn't get boat out anyway.

It's moored at Davies's in Sandbanks, unforunately, can't get down there much before 6pm during the week due to work, if you are about, I would appreciate another pair of eyes, but please don't put yourself out especially, only if you are around anyway, and thanks for your advice.

I'll pass it on ............ however I can't help feeling that you should just nosey over to the Banks with it as it is and Barry and I will attack the ram while you go to the bar and get a flagon of wrecked.
Absolutely no point in getting bloody minded about things when the weather is like this - it floats, the engine runs and the prop goes round; everything else is a nice to have!

Thanks Duncan, you're quite right, it's just too nice to bugger about and the wrecked sounds great! Only trouble is the engine is stuck high and dry, so I can't get out there. Aux is ok for getting out of trouble, but I'm not sure it will push us through harbour entrance.

sry - misunderstood; thought you couldn't trim out.
Back to plan A - get man to sort it out before Friday night! If this fails we will see what can be done to get you out over the weekend ........you could always buy aztec a beer Wednesday night on the Quay at Wareham and get another opinion!

Doing my best, I keep leaving him messages, as funnily enough, he's not answering his mobile. Just want him to tell me what he actually DID do last time to release it, if he does we'll be out like a shot!

help in usa

I know many outboard models well but not this particular one, sorry. However, there are lots of forums in the US that can help because there are zillions more outboards there than here. For example try this http://www.outboardrepairs.com/evinrude/

Be sure to post the year of the engine as the evinrude 70 exists in various forms

If it is making the right noise it's probly not the motor, more likely the hydraulics side.

Good luck

I think you'll find there's a pressure release screw to allow the engine to drop. The screw is normally sited at the end of the ram. All it does is allow fluid to pass to the other side of the piston in the ram. It should be easily get atable for emergencies and flat batteries. Have you the owners manual for the engine?

I take it all in the know are being angelic over Barry's minor mishap?
Beer fest at the Bank's has me hooked for Saturday - and getting Sap[pho there doesn't seem particularily challenging between us!

Mishap? Which one was that, have I missed sumfink.

Back to hydraulics, if it won't move under power, and won't move when pushed, a seized ram perhaps. Over to you Col, Duncan & Barry, you're the experts.

No doubt see you all around Studland at the weekend. Might be able to manage a swift half./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
