Favourite music to play on the boat -top 5

Makam and Clancy, "Sea chanty's" or "Grey Lady of the sea, Simon LeBon"
All kidding aside, Its Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson for me, or Christy Moore, or the Corrs, or James Brown, just depends on the mood and whether I am busy on the vhf or not:D

Orinoco Flow aka Sailaway by Enya
The Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel
Proud Mary by Credence Clearwater Revival
Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Flatt and Scruggs
Sloop John B by the Beachboys

Just bought a new boat and am putting together some cruisng music, this thread is giving me some great ideas.

The music that most makes me think of the sea when I listen to it is Tristan & Isolde - the waves of sound that wash around the drama are beautifully meaningful to anyone who's been at sea in a sail boat.

I guess my five are:
1. This is What You Are - Mario Biondi and the High Five
2. I Wanna Be Your Dog - Uncle Tupelo
3. Rufus does Judy at Carnegie Hall - Rufus Wainwright
4. Epilogue from Ahkenaten - Phillip Glass
5. Filipino Box Spring Hog - Tom Waits

Some of them may explain why I don't often get to choose the music on the boat...

Were you trying to sneakily get a BOGOF with your fifth choice? Beethoven's fifth has the famous V sign as it first notes while the Pastoral is Beethoven's sixth, or was it merely a typo?

No not a BOGOF, 'cos the fifth is not one of my most favourite, just a typo. I'm enjoying finding out what everyone listens to on the boat.

1. Alice Cooper - Aspirin Damage
2. Scorpions - The Zoo
3. Louis Armstrong - We have all the Time in the World
4. Andy Williams - Music to Watch Girls By
5. Dick Van Dyke - Hushabye mountain

Rarely listen to music on the boat, never when underway, usually at anchor if its too miserable or cold to enjoy the great outdoors.

Burn Commie Burn, Capitalist Punishment
Anarchy Isn’t Working, Don’t Think Now
Nowhere Is Somewhere, Mary’s Abortion
The 24 Hour Garage Has Shut, Stone Head Munch Bunch

Tebbit Stole My Bike, Capitalist Punishment

Any time during a good sessi

Well I have to say that I provided music for a group of boats in the summer at Kurressaare marina and most popular was my collection of Blues and Rock ... various numbers by John Lee Hooker, Queen, The Who, Cliff Richard, Van Morrison, UB40, U2 and others ... I think the success was from the variety ...

We had Finnish and Swedish girls dancing on various boats ... the guys laughing and providing the 'refreshments' .... totally unplanned ....

A thoroughly enjoyable experience ... and I'm usually the one who hates others music blaring out !!

Orwell Music

Dark Side of the Noon ..

Remember it well .. New boat .. THEN BELLS and RINGS ETC .. Switched the engine into neutral just in case ..

What a plonker .. :(

Its now called Orwell Music .. We have spent many a happy hour pottering up and down with Pink Floyd .. :D

Right now (it will probably change!)

1) Carl Jenkins' Adiemus - pretty much anything by Carl Jenkins!
2) Bach - exactly what would depend on mood, but there's Bach for ANY mood.
3) Mozart, if I feel like something a bit tinkly - heretical, I know, but I find Mozart a bit samey.
4) Saint-Seans Symphonie Fantastique
5) Any other classical music!

Here we go then ..

1. Beautiful Day - U2
2. Stars - Dubstar
3. The Cross of Changes - Enigma
4. Free Falling - Tom Petty
5. I Believe in You- Amanda Marshall

the sundays, pixies, liz phair, patrice marzin, pink floyd, its a beautiful day, indigo girls, tory amos, rita mitsoukos, telephone, gordon lightfoot, manu chao, almamegretta,

Almost impossible to reduce a list to 5 items and really no need to when you consider the stockage potential of modern devices.

So as a variance, and rather than listing for example a complete work, here are some pieces or extracts of pieces that I never tire of hearing.

"Oh mes amis ... " La Fille du Regiment Donizetti Pavarotti (with the 9 "high C's" - good name for a boat...)
Beethoven's 5th piano concerto (Emperor) (Emil Gilels)
"Nuit d'Ivresse" Les Troyons Berlioz Roberto Alagna + Angela Georghiu
"Queen of the Night" Magic Flute Mozart Sumi Jo
The Goldberg Variations Bach Glen Gould
Laudate Dominum Mozart Aled Jones
"I Knew Him so Well" Chess BB from ABBA Elaine Paige Barbara Dickson
"The Scarlet Tide" Cold Mountain Alison Krauss
"The Lark" (Piano) Glinka/Balakirev Evgeny Kissin

Ayers to Zappa.

Blimey, I'm amazed you can all narrow it down to five. I couldn't even begin to name a top five but on the helm and alone I put on my headhones and switch on the Zen in random mode and enjoy everything Kevin Ayers to Frank Zappa. In port I enjoy as much modern jazz as my wife will tolerate, then switch to more mutually agreeable stuff like Paul Simon, Eagles, Cat Stevens and light classical.

"O, Fortuna" from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana has to be #1

Here it is on Youtube, close your eyes & enjoy...

I remember humming that to an old gentleman in a specialist classical music shop when I was about 17; To be fair, after a while (excruciating for him I'm sure) he worked out what I was getting at and I bought the album.

Shame the shop didn't last long, now we just have homoginised ourpricevirginhmv stores. The last independent near me is cob records in porthmadog.

I got to know Carl Orff when my son was learning to play the violin. Great piece Carmina Burana and of course used to good effect in that advert! My son did ok with the violin, getting up to grade 7. He now plays piano, mandolin, bass guitar and sings as well. I'm proud of him.

Yes I agree five pieces of music is well short of how many you would want to pick, but it's a start and there's obviously not enough room for every choice. I'm finding this thread fascinating.
