The "New" bridge being installed .From the text it infers the original mechcanism was retained and only the deck replaced

Before we get all excited ....
Ps This is from the inhouse Medway Ports newspaper dated 1976

Well the gates went. Huge crane. The temporary bridge was not compatible with the old supports. Or something similar.

Then it all went very quiet and everybody has cleared off.
Right now the road is closed and causing total chaos in the area.

Another KCC triumph.

Will the environmentalists let the basin be dredged?
Also access with any draught will be around springs for sure.

Probably get filled up with super market trollies and derelicts with boats.

Short item on local TV newslast night, temp bridge has been installed ?
The future of the old dock.
Somewhere civilised to moor ie water and power would make it an ideal destination for boaters ?
Hopefully would not become "we will look the other way" livaboard marina and visitors would be actively encouraged.
Faversham has so much to offer to folks especially those who might arrive by water.
More of interest in one street in Faversham in my opinion ( all compact and walkable ) than in the entire town of Whitstable,
Unless or course you like over expensive resturants and the rows and rows of 1940s terraced houses Whitstable has to offer. :)

I like Faversham but the creek really really needs dredging!!!

Bring back the BP Haulier!

View attachment 83724

She was built in Faversham and kept the creek in good order for twenty years!

launched sideways ??

When the lock gates were in position do remember the sluice gates automatically about low water to flush the channel.
Woken about 03.00 with the boat well afloat due to the exiting water.

I googled “BP Haulier”. I remember that little tanker very well, because on my first attempt to visit Faversham in 1973 I had parked the good ship Mytica, all 18ft x 6ft2ins x 3ft 6ins of her...

... on a bank in the creek almost within sight of the Shipwright’s Arms and was waiting for the tide to make when several hundred tons of coastal tanker went past us going up the creek backwards!

Did I feel inadequate!?

Well it will be a wonderful place to be. But the access will be challenging. Need the HM out in the river greeting boats and providing pilotage.
For an example of excellent pilotage take a look at the Wexford and the real time mapping.

H,mm my normal(MoBo) approach was to sit outside until those first bouys float and creep in as early as possible while the gutway is still obvious.

Oldgit's advice is wise, as ever; there is also a good leaflet available at Faversham which explains in great detail how to handle the creek, advice which pretty well mirrors what we have written ourselves in ECP. I think that Faversham is a great place to visit, but nobody should go up there as first-timers expecting to find luxurious facilities. It is what it is, an old working creek in very slow transition to something better. The Dutch would have transfomed it years ago and it would be a hugely popular destination by now. All credit to the hard-working bunch of locals who are slowly making a difference.

My dad had a yacht moored at Hollowshore around then and the Shipwrights seemed quite happy to serve children that they knew with beer. They also told your parents as well, so well controlled. Watching the tanker reverse upward interesting along with how it turned round to start with just beyond the pub.

Well, much to local relief, there is a temporary bridge in place.
Wonder how long temporary means.

As for dredging the basin or the channel, watch this space.

boat moored at Poslipo.jpgLast year moored outside Posilpo for the nautical festival a neighbour offered Electricity And we had a great time, boat set happily on the mud considering that we travel half a mile it was a great success.

A "temporary" Bailey bridge over the Medway at Aylesford was there for about............ 20 years :)

as far as I can find out there was some considerable dispute about who the bridge belong to. ie. who was going to cough up for the vital repairs.Believe that Peel Ports were found to be liable to some degree.
Any development depends of the bridge and lock gates being sorted.
One curious thing.......where are the NIMBIES ?
Remember a little stand in Faversham square a few years ago trying to promote the scheme but where are the hordes of outraged citizens with their clipboards and petitions or..................... will the venture put up hice prices and keep the unwashed out of the cinque port.

Real challenge will be the need to dredge the basin.

Whether the newt & toad brigade allow it?
Who will pay for any pontoons and services?

How will the lock be operated?
Probably in office hours only
Who will collect the fees?

How will it all work for a couple of days around springs?

I fancy the HM job.
