BTW Guessing this is a bit of thread drift -- I can't imagine that area being relevant here?
 
I found a solid object inshore in Alum Bay some years ago , no idea what but certainly in a place where we'd dodged a foul tide in a club race or two

Or even hitting Black Rock close inshore west of Yarmouth, one does test one's luck in the heat of competition and a tack. too late perhaps avoiding the traffic jam at Hurst.

That'll prob have been this little bugger unless you had gone right in to the SE of the bay where there are some big rocks.

The one I'm thinking of doesn't show great either on lower zoom vector charts or large scale raster ones

Quite possibly, I tried a search later by dinghy and never found it. but we anchored there often (but more cautiously) having contacted it once. (y)
More likely CapnSensible parked his yellow tub there while the crew went for a run ashore without marking it’s position.

It will be a fairly old boat, and I believe J/Boats were early adopters of resin infusion techniques, which I think were used on the J/120.

Thats all correct. I've done lots of miles on one. I recall being in a bunk one night with the boat slamming through some heavy weather convinced the keel would fall off.

Crack looks odd to me for a wave; unless there had been a previous grounding.

Then again, I’m not an engineer.

Guessing the ensuing investigation will throw some light - if published that is.

From a 2008 J/120 failure. Internal matrix failed apparently. Read all about it ... J109 J120 stress cracking in keel hull connection
 
Very sad if caused by an inherent defect in construction however I haven’t read of J keels falling off unlike certain other makes which seem oft quoted with this issue.

Me neither but the SA thread linked above detail three j/120s, two of which certainly had the same problem - and that was thirteen years ago. It also mentions redesigns and a refit program for other models.
 
Out of the 81 that have retired so far (48 hours into the race), the reasons given approximate to the following..

Collision 7
Dismasting 4
Keel issues 2
Rigging 6
Damaged sail 10
Charging issue 3
Electronics 3
Equipment other 10
Injury 4
No detail 31

It's looking like taking care of the mainsail (specified in most of those ten) is rather important to keep you in the race..
