Not sure if you still read this, sailorman: My father sailed the fastnet 79 race on an Oyster 37 called 'Jolie Brise'. The crew was from West-Germany. They took down the main boom (on deck) and ejected the sea anchor during the storm. No-one was injured & the yacht remained fully intact. My father passed away two years ago and the skipper of the crew past away in summer 2023. There is a book in German language listing all one tonners that entered the race (& all other classes of course); pretty sure though that this is just a translation from an english book. I would need to double check next time I visit my parents house re the name of that book, cannot recall it now. My father also recorded a short super 8 video from Jolie Brise during the storm. Kindly let me know in case you still read this, best regards, Peter, Berlin, Germany

Hi Peter, If you do look at that book, would you mind looking to see if it lists any Hustler 30's taking part? I have one and got stopped by a guy that told me his uncle and father had raced them in the 79 race. I know a 35 was mentioned in the English book. Which I will read again. He was convinced on this , so I'd like to know.

I’ve only just seen this, but wasn’t Sailorman’s boat an Oyster called Jolie Brise? Maybe this was the reason for his interest in the subject. I met him once, briefly, in St Peter Port, but it was a long time ago.

My old boat was a Holman and Pye designed Red Admiral. Very similar to the Oyster 37 they designed at the same time.

She took part in the 1979 fastnet and there is an account Articles Fastnet Race 1979 - Red Admiral

One of my crew tracked down the then skipper who I think is / was in Canada by then who kindly provided a copy of his log.
Fantastic report. Many thanks for posting. I was on board an Oyster 37 called Mutine. We suffered no damage and ended up in Crosshaven.

Autonomy was recently based at Port Dinorwic.
I wasn't sure about her full history but know she was also owned by my late brother who "competed" in ISORA races under SCYC burgee from Pwllheli.
