Faraday torch??

Probably not the correct spelling, however, I decided to put one of these on the boat just in case. No batteries just shake it and it charges up.

I had it placed some 5' away from the compass and it still effected it.....its going in the rear hold and if it effects the compass there I'll eat more carrots and through it overboard?

Just a warning in case anybody else is putting one on the boat?

Get an old steel box (the sort some whiskies come in) and put the torch in that. Won't completely stop the effect, but should noticeably reduce it.

Hardly surprising that the torch affects the compass given the strength of the magnet inside them.

Sounds like if you drop one of them into a steel box, you may never get it out again!

I got one of these last year. Good torch, but as you say needs to be well away from compass. The other problem is that it attracts every bit of loose steel on the boat. It comes up looking like a bag of scrap if you put it in a drawer or something!

If you really want to try and reduce the magnetic field, try and get hold of some "mu-metal" to line the box with.

Its also worth remembering that not all torch batteries are cased in non-magnetic stainless steel.

Agreed that mumetal would be the best, but it's not that easy to get hold of. The important point is that the box must be of iron or steel; brass, aluminium or any other metal will have no effect at all.

Incidentally, if the torch has picked up other items then they will act as shielding to some extent.
