Falmouth

I'm up and down to Falmouth like a brides nighty!! Been there four or five times through the winter. Drank loads at chain locker, never eaten though. Every one must visit mr Newmans place, if only for an hour or so. If you talk sweetly, you can moor alongside his trip boat, but not if it's busy of course.

Prices have had to go up at Castaways, Fay's got to pay for her new Jag.

Does that mean we got shares in the new Jag then?
Lorra lorra money-grabbing going on around here nowdays, seems to be '[oops not nice] the locals' who put money across the bars 11/12 months a year.
I remember Pandora's early last year putting their prices way up, and asked one of the (co-?)owners why. He said they were now doing LESS turnover with a HIGHER profit margin'........as I said it's all about money...
Two quotes come to mind from Robert Redford (different fils I think)
One was about having or getting "F*ck-You" money, Lottery win etc which we would ALL like....the other was and is still very profound...."How much, is enough?"....

The Pandora was ok when they had the food upstairs, then they started changing owners every two years, and new people come in and down go the standards, and up go the prices.
Never been in Casterways, fell out with Fay years ago, though we cannot work out how they built it. Many years ago the wife ran the acounts at Mylor, and they wanted to put a window in the back, council said no it's a listed building. Then a couple of years ago they pull most of it down and convert it into Casterways.

But for a visitor. The Pandora is still a good spot for a pint or two. Must admit the food ordering proceedure was to difficult, so we left. Not before twiseling all the boats round at the end of pontoon. Story told earlier!!

For "snooky" out of the way places I'd concentrate on:-
1) R.Yealm - get there early 'cos pontoon space can get snaffled up quickly - pubs with food at both Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo.
2) Up the Tamar to Calstock on the tide and also Dandy Hole anchorage up St German's River. Decent anchorage off Cawsands/Kingsands in S.W'lies.
3) Fowey - like Salcombe - gets very busy but is pretty to call in at.
4) Up Fal as far as Malpas.
5) Helford River is delightful.

Personally if I was going Salcombe or Dartmouth to Falmouth I'd go S. of Eddystone - this also gives a good offing of Dodman Point as well.
As mentioned in despatches by hlb, the water can get very lumpy around some of the headlands when there are wind against tide conditions.
Hope you have a great trip, I will hopefully be in the area at the end of May as well - this means you'll probably have lousy weather, sorry.

Falmouth - Thanx

Thanx all for all of the great advice guys.

I'll be hoping to get down there from May 20th, so will have beers on board.. open boat for any forumite who wants a drink.

Guess I'd better get a flag sorted hadn't I!!

Re: Falmouth - Thanx

You realy dont want to go to St Ives. It's quite unsafe on that coast with few bolt holes. Padstow is nice but it's a bit out the way, less going up Bristol chanel. If you like, out the way the Scillys are very nice in the right weather and about the only good reason for going round the Lizard.

Re: Falmouth - Thanx

Quite agree but there are a few more spots to explore on the east side of the Lizard.
1 Gillan Creek....needs rising tide, smaller but beautiful as Helford...no pub tho.
2 Porthallow beach...nice pub the 5 Pilchards to dinghy ashore to.
3 Coverack just the other side of the Manacles.
4 THE BEST food around the area found so far this (and last) season has got to be a place called The Cove, at Maenporth Beach (dinghy ashore jobby) Head for the mouth of Helford Passage and it's the first cove on the starboard side. Cracking tapas bar, good food all round and good beer, sheltered location.

Just who is MR Newman?????You got yer feet under the table in Falmouth a bit quick din't yer????????

Hardly quick, I've been trundling back and forth between the Solent and Falmouth for 6 years. Even made it to Stourport once. Cant think theres any nook or cranny I have not been up, just cant remember all the names without chart in front of me. Best way I've found across the boring Lyme bay on a ggod day, is round the edge, stopping at Lyme Regis, then maybe Exmouth for the night, or Brixham perhaps.

Oh, Mr Newman, he's become a bit of a mate. Tho he does have his funny ways with all his signs and things. Me and a mate had a laugh a few years ago and did a Wickers World type documentary on one trip. Mr Newman and the Tamimima?? featured in the vidio. The ship is owned by Mr Bamford of JCB fame, as is the little one next to it, which was supposed to be being transformed to cruise the med for twelve guests. Nowts happened for years tho.

Yes....bells are ringing now.......Tamima is that big lump just outside Smugglers Inn. I did hear that he had sold out (your mate the JCB bod) to a much bigger company...or was it JCB that sold out to your mate with Tamima? Anyways, glad you enjoy your time down here, it's a wonderful playground. When you are down again, give Sir Osis of the River a shout and several pints could be in order. Might even introduce you to some really sound p*ss-head raggies that I (we) hang around with....

Quote from HLB...."Hardly quick, I've been trundling back and forth between the Solent and Falmouth for 6 years."

No direspect to your 6 years but that hardly scratches the surface by Cornish standards.
Story that goes round these here parts.......
In the last century a couple moved down to Cornwall with their 3 year old boy. They died after many years living here. The boy grew up and spent all his days here and having never even crossed the Tamar, died at 99 years old. All and sundry attended his funeral and amidst the stries and tales and chatter at the wake, one old countryman was heard to say...."Nice old boy he was......twern't Cornish tho, were 'e?"......
