Fairline Targa 40 - sunk in Poole Harbour

I hope the Targa owner, or any other owner who has had some bad luck, gets sorted and carries on.
Not a big fan of the way some folk circle like vultures at someone else's distress .
It just occurred to me that if all boats were built to the standard of lifeboats there would be no need for lifeboats!
Enjoy the rest of summer everyone.

My lifeboats name is Elsie May, as the tradition with lifeboats is to name them after a family member or sponsor who is deceased. It's registered as a motor sailor due to the removable A frame and Lanteen rig. I'm about two thirds of the way into the hull up build project.

So why is Elsie May so much better than Harley, or is it you dislike the Fairline Targa and also the Botnia Targa. I really don't understand what you are on about. I personally wouldn't want to own a lifeboat but each to his or her own.

Ordinarily I would agree but by reading some accounts of this incident and the owner's previous form, I remain to be convinced that this is bad luck and not shoddy seamanship.

I like steel boats, but would only consider a new build, or a design where you have aceess to every corner of the bilges to deal with any rust.

Also a fan of genuine epoxy supplied directly by a top of the game company like West Systems in the US. If you use that for the hull it's far tougher and lasts almost forever in comparison with polyester resin that most boat builders use.
The RNLI currrently use carbon fiber composite panels for their boats, but unless they have any free offcuts, it's just too expensive.

What I don't like to see is designs that sink when you knock a single hole in them. Totally nuts in my opinion!
Of course, these boats could be built to be unsinkable but I've no doubt that would add cost and other compromises.

Are you aware of any cases where a pleasure / motor boat has sunk in the UK due to hull damage and the crew have perished? I struggle to think of any (unlike fatalities caused by overloading, carbon monoxide poisoning, falling over board, collisions with other boats, etc)?

I hope the owner/crew are OK. I also look forward to understanding the facts of this in order to learn. Regardless of the circumstances, there are bound to be lessons or at least reminders. Experience may reduce the likelihood of stupidity , but it never eliminates it!

These bits of reporting do seem to indicate that there may be more to this than meets the eye:

"The couple left the area after being rescued and haven't made any arrangements to recover the boat.

A Poole coastguard spokesman said: 'We were tasked to carry out a welfare checks on two persons that had been recovered by RNLI Poole lifeboat from a vessel taking on water.

On arrival the individuals had been seen by members of the yacht club leaving the vicinity, so unfortunately no checks could be carried out.'

A spokesman for the Poole Harbour Master's office said the motor cruiser would be seized later today to protect the wellbeing of other seafarers.

A spokesman for the nearby Salterns Marina said that the same boat was turned away from the marina last week because it didn't have permission to moor and that the police were called."

As a relatively new boater its awful seeing something like this and glad those involved are safe and well. As Bowlerhat says it would be really useful to understand the facts and how it all unravelled. It could avert a future situation that may not end as well.
