Fairline Squadron 78 refit/fit - Hard Top

Thanks for that. In fact Vince the awesome Valeter had already suggested M77 and that's what's going on the boat in a couple of weeks time (assuming I can get clarity on the whole blasting/scraping/sanding thing).

M77 is so last year! International have just supplied me with some Micron 99 to try on my boat this year. Don't think it's available for sale at the moment but will let you know how it performs in the mag.

We are also going to be carrying out some panel tests of our own this season on a number of different antifouling products to see how they get on in different locations. Any volunteers for taking one over to San Carles or Antibes?

Fuel Cell

Yes please post information on the fuel cell (on another thread). Sounds very interesting

Hm, not much to say, it is an easy task. Much more proud I am about my watermaker installation, which was much much more work. I installed Efoy Pro2400, it delivers 3.3-4.5A@24V and consumes 0.9l/kWh of Ethanol (about 2-2.5l/day) which gives about 100Ah a day. This is more then 1 hour generator, will be enough to have the generator running when really 240V are needed, and not just for charging. During a normal trip when we stay 2-3 days at one place it will avoid some discussions with SWAMBO.

I haven't practical experience yet, it was running just an hour and delivered constantly 4.6A. But ambient temperature wasn't that high, during summer it might be less.

I removed the toilet and the washbasin from the never used crew cabin, it gave a nice place for both, FC and WM. Controller is placed just at the entry to the saloon. Installation itself is really easy, just to find the pathway for the cabling. 1.5² sense line and 4² charge line f rom the FC to the domestic battery bank (600Ah), and a RJ45 cable from the FC to the controller. Ethanol canister below, and it is running. Of course we do not need to discuss the price per Ah, but that's the same for many things. The difference between men and boys.....

Re: Fuel Cell

Sorry haven't updated this thread in ages. Refit is all done:

1. hard top
2. Curved fins
3. Prop rebalance
4. New transducers and black box echo sounder/sonar
5. decks sanded
6. Custom moulded GRP storage box on flybridge to cover the base of the HT mast, where Fairline would normally out a sunbed but I didn't want one
7. New carbon ensign staff made by Colhel on here
8. Dedicated AIS antenna

A few HT pics are pasted below. I'm really pleased with this - the job is factory perfect and has gone really well. It has been fitted exactly to the factory spec because the factory team who fit them in the factor flew over and did it (plus my upgrade requests - cantalupi high CRI dimmable lighting, silver wrap, black domes, antennae moved to atop the HT, Bose speakers in HT, etc) . I'll get pics of Colhel's ensign next weekend - I'm just having a tensioner device made for the cord that holds the ensign on. Colin's machining work is breathtaking - the thing fits together like a Swiss watch

I haven't used the boat much so I'll report on the curved fins later. They sure work, but I'd like to get some data etc to try to compare their performance with flat fins

Hi HelgeA. Thanks for all that info. I don't wish to rain on parades but I gotta say my reaction is that it is quite a big piece of kit for 4.6Amps @24v, 110 watts. I'm not sure I would live with that space/output trade off. I'm going to google and see what there is at say 500W - that would be pretty useful during overnight anchoring - maybe the power per cc of space consumed gets better with a bigger unit. It's an interesting idea - thanks

You want to try to have a word with Intelligent Energy at Loughborough. I can help with contacts if you are interested.

Re: Fuel Cell

Looking great jfm. Two reversing cameras!
Yep. One points down ish so I can see the tender in detail, and people on the passerelle when docking, etc. The other points at horizon so functions as rear view mirroir - handy at lower helm in busy waters. Truth is I need only 3 cameras - e/room, reversing and ancam, but the split screen views work better with 4, so I have to find a 4th camera whether I need it or not - hence this rear view mirror thing. BTW, I think I should paint them black (I read your mind there... :D)

Plumbed into the Garmin, or iPad?
Plumbed to Garmin, which then squirts the entire Garmin MFD including camera views to iPad(s) via wifi. ?With this set up, holding an ipad is exactly the same as having a Garmin MFD in front of you - all the touch controls work exactly the same so you can call up cameras, control the plotter/radar, turn up/down the fusion music, steer the boat via a/pilot, all from iPad and iPhone

Amazing! The grey looks just about right.

I've just, (on a much smaller boat), got a dedicated AIS mast and the difference is pronounced, I'm surprised that it's not standard practice on a small ship? Great job and good to see that you're not being sold short by your boat manafacturer :)

Haha! Definitely not being sold short - some of the Fairline team have worked out that there is a revenue stream in refit work. I think henry meant that they should fix your busted float switch as well, but it's a step in the right direction for a factory to be interested in the aftermarket.

I reckon FL should do a HT for the sq65 - that boat sells in considerable numbers and there would be plenty of retrofit work on Sq65s

Re: Fuel Cell

I must admit to being a bit dubious when you said you were fitting a hardtop to your boat, jfm, but I must say that you've done a great job. A really classy bit of kit

Re: Fuel Cell

Yup, very nice.

Incidentally, do you ever consider Plasti Dip for mods (like your domes)? Struck me that might be better than vinyl for complex shapes. Maybe suitable for hiding the unfinished aluminium on JTB's seat mod?

Re: Fuel Cell

Yep I often think of it but haven't actually used it. I have used the sort of equivalent where you heat something (metal usually) up and dip it into aerated plastic powder, which melts onto the metal. Eg on the handles of pliers.

Plasti dip It would work nicely for Jimmy's seat base. For the domes, if you mean the sat domes, I think it has to be awlgrip/awlcraft paint to get the right gloss and finish, imho.
