Just measuring up for new stays for the mizzen. There is an 'extra' link between the fork and the deck fitting. Is this required or can the fork fit directly to the deck fitting?

We lost a stay as there was not enough articulation between the stay and deck fitting. Is this what you are seeing?

That's what it looks like to me.

No - you don't need it as you can get turnbuckles with built in toggles. I initially had extra toggles/shackles on almost every stay. When I had to have new rigging the local rigger advised using new turnbuckles with toggle/articulation on the deck end. Sta-Lok turnbuckles. I am pleased with the result (and less things to break/go wrong).

Thanks guys. So the toggle is 'a thing of purpose then? I guess 'articulation' means the stay is able to twist a bit without straining.
I note that the fork on the adjacent stay has no toggle with the fork just pinned through the plate. Where is the articulation in that fitting?

Articulation is less important on lightly loaded stays like your lowers and it was quite common in the past not to have toggles, particularly when the "chain plates" are hoops like yours. Essential on forestays and where the lower attachment is with fork and pin into flat plate as is common these days. As suggested turnbuckles with integral toggles are common now, whereas in the past shackles or even rings were often used to get articulation.

I have similar on a stay - but its because previous owner when he replaced mast stays - one was short. I would suggest that may be reason OP has that link.

As long as the throat of the turnbuckle and the pin are large enough gauge to be able to move on the deck U hoop - there really is no need for any additional item - unless of course stay is short !! If the turnbuckle and pin on its own are not free enough to move on the U fitting - then I suggest change it for one that fits better. Also longer of course to get rid of the extra link !

That's my honest opinion.
