Yes, of course they should be registered and licenced, but be careful what you wish for...
That comes up every time...
Registration of boats and insurance should not be a problem in UK. I know the freedom infringement bits, but...
Here, motor boats over 6hp require a driving licence, but sailing yachts do not. Seems to work.

If the primary motive power is sails, then no licence. Includes the average motor sailer.
Indeed there is a complicated formula to work out whether a boat is powered by sails or not.

Some years a go on a very hot sunday there was a lot of dinghies sailing, including cadets. Many people swimming. As well as that there were jetskis.
there was a lot of noise & some people had decided to bring their Chelsea tractors onto the beach. So one can imagine the confusion of people
Those on the bridge of our sailing club were complaining about the jetskis. They counted 18. The most we have ever seen on one day.

However, when one analysed the problems that they were causing, it was clear that it was all down to four of them.
The rest were observing the 8kts speed limit close inshore & were acting perfectly sensible. They were having fun in the bay, away from everyone else.
The 4 were roaring in & out from the beach, frightening both cadet sailors & swimmers. One in particular was very noisy. All 4 were being shared by idiots with kids & girls climbing aboard, screaming & showing off close inshore, with total disregard for others.

The Aqua fuzz were called & they arrived in their launch, "Alert" & quickly sorted the idiots. But it tarred all the other jetski owners with the same, very unfair, brush.

Our local motorboat & ski boat club act very responsibly. They used to have a set of buoys arranged in a ring in the bay, away from others & sometimes have jetski racing around them. No problems. They are too far away for noise to be an issue & it is all regulated. The craft owners are careful to observe the speed limit & the club make sure that they do.
In that environment I see no problem with jetskis. They are just a fun thing & used responsibly they have as much right to use the water as anyone else
That being said, I cannot see the point. I recall an RYA report that found that the average use was 25 hours before the owners packed them in & moved on to something else.

You Tube to the rescue. Can't imagine being able to do that today and through a boat yard with yachts lifted out too.

Pete

Thanks for that thoroughly enjoyed that, there is no way that would happen today with all of our H & S. Casually bumping cars out of the way, having helped organise public events cars and people parking them where they fancy is a nightmare.

A surprising post. Could you enlighten me what is the purpose of motor bikes/PCW in the hands of most people is?

Please note: My late mother was an A&E nurse before the days of helmets. I attended the funerals of two close friends in their late teens killed on their bikes and rendered first aid to several bikers at the roadside (never seen anybody empty a cylinder of EntoNox in 60 seconds before)! I have a friend who holds a World Record, OK it is on a trike, but he has the need for speed, and worked with several very advanced motorcyclists.

Motor bikes are a very efficient means of transport, emergency delivery, and also fun. Riding one doesn't have to be fatal. PWCs are used for rescue, surveilance and have other uses but I fully accept that we are plagued by dickh**d users that bring them into dosrespect.
Each to their own. Horse riding causes a sopectacular number of serious injuries but you fail to mention Dobbin. Maybe all contact sport should be banned to save A&E space?!

Being ex-NHS, I have some sympathy for that view - or make them pay for their treatment, but you'd then have to say "You've smoked all your life and now you've got cancer - pay for your treatment." I have some sympathy for that, too, but where do you stop? Better just to fund the NHS properly, whatever properly means in the context of near infinite demand and finite resources.

Friend worked for Honda. Slight involvement in a survey about bike and horse accidents, partly funded by the British Esquestrian Mob.
Bit later, he asked what the result was, as nothing had come back. Apparently the horse lot shelved it as not to favourable to them.
