expensive antifoulant versus cheap

two years ago i had my hull painted in Turkey with 2 layers of Jotun MegaYacht cost including application was around 850 euros . Quantity required was about 15 litres . minimum size sold is in a 20 litre tin.
now on the hard in Leros Greece . When boat was lifted after two years very little fouling . I could count the tiny barnacles on one hand and only some slime
so cost per year was 425 euros including application etc

Now got a quote from local chandler in Leros (Agmar) for a 20 litre tin , paint only, 1800 euros to apply my self

cant even ship out of UK so now looking at Sea queen relatively cheaper .
any body got any cost details for this out of say Athens

Why on earth would you spend so much money, on such expensive A/F go to the local builder merchant/ chandler, near the sea ,and use what the local boats use .

It probably stronger than the fancy priced one,about 10 euro a liter.?

That's a lot of money! Have you tried the chandler in Lakki town? I have bought quite a lot of fittings and small parts from him, very reasonable.

Over the past nearly ten years in the Med we have had a different antifouling every year, ranging from the cheapest Flag stocked by Toolstation to some quite expensive Plastimo stuff and a couple by International. I cannot say we have noticed a great deal of performance difference between them.

My experience exactly - the cheap and cheerful local ones need to go on more thickly but @ 25% of the price of the "named" antifoulings, it's no great burden.

I now follow the advice of an English guy who lives and works in Barcelona a lives aboard, claims he has the cleanest bottom in the Med.

He uses the very cheapest he can buy, what the local fishermen use, and adds the hottest chilli powder he can get, to a thicker but paint-able consistency, when dry feel slightly rough but no noticeable effect on performance, unless your a racer and want a polished finish.
I have used the same for last five years and have excellent results, and I am in a high fouling area.
 
EU45 antifoul sells at £55 per 2.5 litres and has free delivery to anywhere in Europe (less Cyprus) if your order is more than £60. No idea if its any good, but it does get you an antifoul at less than the silly prices being charged in some parts of Europe......

EU45 is one of the ones we have tried. It was OK but didn't live up to its advertising as being better because it had the maximum copper content legally allowed. We were expecting something special, but it was pretty ordinary.
 
If I remember Jotun couldn't sell Sea Queen in Greece! Can't remember why not, but at the time I was looking at buying 200 ltr + for various people. I was on the phone to the UK and their main suppliers in Athens for days and they just wouldn't supply it to Greece!!

I'd use what the local fishermen use and add some Round Up to it (your local farmers suppliers will have it). I'd guess that's what the fishermen do and it'll work and be far cheaper than named stuff.

Speaking to a UK supplier they only ship abroad in pallets because its toxic so small quantities exprted not on

Was pleased with the work done in Turkey so I enquired to see what the paint only would cost in in Leros

here is the reply i got from the Agmar chandler who have just opened a shop in Lakki

"Thank you for your email, further to your request for antifouling paint we suggest you the following:
· Hempel Classic Mille: 8 cans of 2.5 liters cost 1160€

· International Micron Extra: 8 cans of 2.5 liters cost 1120€

· Jotun Imperial: 1 can of 20 liters cost 1879.20€ (we inform you that there is only black colour available at the moment!)

All above prices include VAT@ 16%, and they are valid for now and not for spring 2013. "

I used to have copper coat but it failed when the underlying Gel shield failed and even then had a huge amount of fouling mainly barnacles in South Italy on the bits that did not peel off . I still have scars on my back from scraping them off in Messina not to mention the hoards of stinging jelly fish

So I am looking for a credible alternative that works but not at those prices

By the way Roundup only works through the leaves of plants Its a waste of time applying to the earth or in this case the hull before anything has grown and how would it kill barnacles ? which are animals not plants

I am now thinking of doing this and using some local stuff if I could be sure that it would be effective and positively recommended by previous users .



The reason I used Jotun Sea Quantum and later Megayacht ,which by the way is great, was that I had had a bad experience with Coppercoat I did not at the time know how long I would be in the water or where I would end up . It might have lasted another year with a little touch up but I decided to haul out to establish the extent of and fix some minor blisters on the hull particularly when I had had a new gel coat applied in 2007
 
Unless you are trying to alter the rule of physics, try the cheap local stuff. I have used 3 types since we bought the boat. International Micron Plus = 3/10 (3 seasons which only one was extended, circa 16 months, hence the rating), Teamac = 9/10 and Noblec = 8/10. We haul out every year, so I'm starting to think, do we need to spend a lot on antifoul. I can't tell you what the Inter/Micron cost because that was when it was just a vacation boat and the yard did the work at an all in price. The others, when the work was done by myself cost around €15 per ltr.

Yes I think that too much emphasis if put on price. I think it is okay to use what the locals use ,I cannot think that local fishermen would put on 30 euro + a liter.

And why spend so much money if you are only crusing in warm waters, you can dive down and clean off every couple of weeks if needed .

Yes I am now thinking of hauling out every year for various reasons hence my interest

Last year I put Gaelforces own brand(reflagged flag?)-thick and odd colour when dry on hull-£30 for 2.5 litres.
A season in a heavy fouling environment with the boat spending a lot of time stationary-basically no fouling whatsoever
 
I considered using Jotun in turkey this summer but was not cheap and cheerful anymore same price as international etc. so used Marlin a Italian make and that seems very good.
Am in Fethiye very high fouling bay, tried cheap types, coppercoat, ultrasound all a waste of time.
i think adding plutonium might be good if anyone has got any spare in there shed let me know.!
 
I got mine very cheap in Athens:D

The red stuff they put on the bottom of the big ships:D

you have to take your own container like old 5ltr paint tins,

I was only in the water a max of 8 months each year, but when hose down it looked as good as new.

Bcos it was so cheap, I re anti fouled it, but I'm sure it would have gone well over the year.

Also I was on the move a lot,not just tied up at the dock.

As bobt says talk to the fishermen, you know "nod nod wink wink" :D:D
 
I think it depends on your cruising habits. We have the boat in the water for only 7-8 months at present and use the cheapest stuff available. After 8 months she has come out of the water as clean as a whistle with less than a small egg cup of barnicles/tube worm shells. If I was in the water for two to three years then yes its worth investing in the expensive stuff. Ships stuff is the best but its not always easy to get hold of it, it does not have to meen the same EU directives. Bear in mind many commercial vessels go 5 years between dockings.
