Exhaust muffler

New to us boat has a Vetus tin can type exhaust muffler but the engine exhaust is (to my ear) a bit too noisy. Would a bigger or newer type of muffler reduce the exhaust note or is it just chucking money away?

Halyard (http://www.halyard.eu.com/) are the people to ask. Will certainly be effective, but won't be cheap.

Cheaper than the Halyard stuff but probably not as good quality.

It is probably a water trap rather than a muffler. Vetus do dedicated mufflers that go in the exhaust after the trap. However, you may find replacing your current trap with an NLP type as suggested will be an improvement.

Yes it's a water trap but it also doubles as a silencer quite effectivelly.What's a NLP type by the way?

Mr T you are quite correct, current setup goes through a metal Vetus water trap - I will have to keep this as alas there is no room to fit anything of a different size. The Vetus muffler fitted after the water trap looks viable and will hopefully stop the exhaust sounding like a Spitfire above 2000 rpm!

There are two different types of Vetus water traps with a lot of flexibility of fittings. Alternatively Halyard Marine have a range of GRP water traps and can make custom ones. The potential problem with the old Vetus type is that they corrode eventually.

I have both a Vetus water trap and their muffler on a 14hp twin. The exhaust note is pleasantly muffled - it's noiser down below than in the cockpit. The only down side is that you can hear the tappets above the exhaust! I haven't ever taken the muffler out to see how effective it is, why would I?
